Digi Layouts Too Cute to Scare

We are welcoming back Ellie Lash this month and so happy she is here! I first got to know Ellie when we were both selling products at Scrapbookgraphics. She was always super helpful and sweet to me as a nervous newcomer to that site.  I have always loved Ellie’s doodles and drawings and I’m so happy that we can all get them once again in her store! She is bound to be a new favorite for many!  Her contribution this month makes me giggle with the little monsters’ silly faces!  Let’s take a closer look at “Too Cute To Scare” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! My name is Ellie Lash. I was born and raised in Hawaii, but now live with my family in Arizona. My husband and I have been married for 12 years, we have seven year old twin boys and one crazy dog.

This is one of two books that I made for my boys. Both of my boys have autism and were non-verbal for a really long time. They have just started speaking in the last couple of years and still struggle with their speech. When teaching them the names of all of our family and extended family, I decided to make these books for them with photos of each family member and their names, scrapped in a style that I knew would appeal to each of them. It worked! And they still like to “read” their Family Books!

Kits used: Flergs Boy Zone, Flergs & Charlize Creations Robotrix, Alpha is from Flergs Boy Zone. Photobook printed at Artscow.

I was a designer before I was a scrapper. I actually started designing “skins” for Proboards forums back in 2005 and stumbled up digital scrapbooking by accident. I thought, “I can do that!” My first attempts were pretty sad, but eventually found my style and improved from there. Of course I had to scrap with my kits so that I could make sure they worked, and then I had my boys in 2006 and started scrapping for real. In 2010 I started designing commercial use products and while that is my main focus now, I do still love to design new kits every now and then.

Oh, everything! A lot of times it will be a color combination that pops out at me and makes me think of something that I think would look cute in those colors. Also, I read a lot, so often I’ll get ideas while reading books.

Computer: My husband built my computer from scratch for me so I’m not sure of the specifics, but I do know I’m running Windows 7 with 8GB of RAM! lol I have dual 22-inch monitors.
Program: Photoshop, Illustrator, Inkscape, and FontCreator.
Camera: Canon Rebel
Anything Else: I use a Wacom Bamboo tablet sometimes when I’m designing CU stuff.
My favorite tip for Photoshop is to use keyboard shortcuts. They save a ton of time! You can Google to find charts, but here’s one that Smashing Magazine posted that I use all the time: http://bit.ly/1cEFDMd

I guess it’s my favorite because I created for my kids. Usually, for me, designing is about working and making things that I like, but will appeal to others. With this kit, I just totally made what I liked and what I thought my boys would like. I love the colors, and of course, I am all about cute animals!
I’m not sure why it’s popular. Maybe because the colors are so bright and happy and people were looking for that after a long winter? lol It’s special to me for those reasons! I had a hard winter with being really sick and stuck at home. This kit kind of helped get me out of my funk and look forward to things getting better.
