Penny Springmann We Just Love The Little Things

I love Penny Springmann’s products! Her “12 Month” and “This Life” series are perfect for scrapping the events, seasons, and LIFE as it happens. I love that I can get her 2 page templates as a 24×12 (they come as 12×12’s as well).  Her word art and fun type makes me super happy as well as her beautiful patterned papers.  I’m thrilled to have her joining us again this month.  Let’s take a closer look at “The Little Things” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month! Here are some layouts created using Penny Springmann’s contribution:

Greetings, everyone! I’m Penny. I currently live in Northwest Arkansas with my husband of 16 years, Paul, our two boys, and our dog, Gary the girl (The boys named her after Sponge Bob’s pet snail). When I’m not designing or working on my website, Scrap Stacks, I enjoy cooking, hiking, reading, and running.

Even though this layout is a few years old, it is still one of my favorites. In fact, I also created a 16×20 gallery wrap canvas of this work to hang in my family room. When I scrap for myself, I have a clean, minimalistic style. I enjoy using overlays and blend modes. This layout uses both texture and lighting overlays. If your software allows you to play with blend modes, I strongly recommend it: blend modes are a wonderful way to add texture and depth to your work.

I created my first official scrapbook in 2000 after my husband and I went on a vacation with my sister and her husband. It was paper and while I enjoyed the process, I switched over to digital in 2003 after the birth of my first son. From the beginning I created my own brushes, elements, and papers. I bought from a few designers here and there, but I mostly tried to save money, so I used items I created. I began blogging and giving out freebies in 2006 and then I soon began selling my designs. In 2007, I became a part Sweet Shoppe Designs and the rest, as they say, is history.

My life. I find that when my designs are inspired by my family, a vacation, a favorite song, or an event, I have a deeper connection to my work and never fall “out of love” with the designs. I do have to say, however, that the right color combination can also rock my socks off and get me motivated.

Computer: I’m up and running on a husband built machine with an Intel Core i7-2600CPU @ 64 GHz – with 64 bit Windows 7. I also use two 21″ monitors. (I LOVE having a two monitor setup. It makes designing so much easier because I have so much space!)
Program: I use Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC
Camera: I have an Olympus OM-D E-M5, Panasonic Lumix, iphone 5
Anything Else: I have a small, almost vintage, 4×6″ wacom tablet I use for drawing or when I need to create/work with paths.
Here are my top 5 tips:

  1. Be true to you – If you love it, it rocks!
  2. Learn the keyboard shortcuts for your software.
  3. Just because a photo is blurry or isn’t studio perfect doesn’t mean you can’t use it! Real life moves quickly – sometimes too quickly for our cameras to keep up. If it’s a shot you love, use it. It’s the memories that go with the image that matter most.
  4. Google is your best friend. If you don’t know how to do something, google it.
  5. Take pictures of tickets, the kiddos artwork, etc. and include them in your scrapbooking.

My current favorite, is This Life: August. It’s my favorite because I based it off of my family summer adventures. From the patterns to the word art, I enjoyed making this kit and find I can use it again and again.

One of my most popular kits is 12 Months: December. I think this kit is popular because it is whimsical yet traditional. I personally enjoy the Merry Everything bit that was inspired by a pin my father wore one Christmas years ago and the holly and berry paper. I won’t tell you how long it took me to get that pattern just right!
