What A Cute Coconut Tree

Sweet, sweet Sara Gleason! I was able to spend a little bit of time (but not enough) with Sara in California in January. It was fun to meet her face-to-face. I have always been a fan of Sara’s templates and when she started designing digital scrapbooking products as well, I was excited! I waited and watched, to see if this was going to be an additional direction for Sara’s designs. Once I could see that she was going to be putting out products more regularly, I emailed her and asked if she would like to join us again as a designer of digital supplies. I really love Sara’s design style! I love the big, bold, clean papers she creates, the inspiring word art, and of course her elements. Let’s take a closer look at “Coconut Tree” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month! Here are some layouts created using Sara Gleason’s contribution:

I am a military spouse, mom, storyteller, gardener, pizza snob, reader, loather of folding laundry, Cubs fan, optimist, encourager, scrapbooker, historian. I feel blessed to be married to my best friend and mom to an imaginative and vivacious soon-to-be second grader. I have a heart for storytelling; I am determined to paint my family’s story portrait by recording moments big and small in words and scrapbooking.

When I created this layout I had a bee in my bonnet about documenting “then” and “now” stories. I had stumbled upon some of my favorite years-old photographs of my daughter and was flooded with nostalgia. So I decided to take some photographs of her “now” holding a sweet photo of herself “then”.

It was a fun and fresh way to let the two timelines collide and visually gave voice to the words I was sharing in my journaling. I think this is a memory keeping exercise I will revisit in the future as I document how she continues to change over the years.

I have always loved memory keeping only it didn’t always manifest itself into scrapbooking as I think of it now. Once upon a time I was drawn to photo albums and slides and keeping notes in journals and making music mixes that captured who I was at any moment in time. After I was married, I began paper scrapbooking and did so for many moons before discovering and falling in love with digital scrapbooking in 2008. When I did, my creativity blossomed in ways it hadn’t before and it really inspired me to tell the story of my family with new energy and dedication. I was and am a scrapbooker before I took my first steps in to designing in May 2010 creating page designs from my own scrap pages. Gradually I was encouraged to explore different design horizons and I began to play with element and kit designs too.

Relationships. I am so inspired by the conversations, the personalities, the dynamics of relationships in my life. So much story lives there in the everyday moments and each person’s journey into becoming who they were made to be. I also find gobs of inspiration through music, nature, and color and smattered all over the internet.

The single greatest tip I have for my own scrapping and one I love to share for others too is this: be mindful of your audience. For who are you keeping these memories? To Whom are you speaking? For what or why or who are you creating? Let the answers to these questions shape your storytelling. Let the answers to these questions be The Why for sharing your creativity and your heart. The rest is just white noise.

I was encouraged by a dear friend for a very long time to create a product inspired by an album I have been working on. It is an alphabet album that documents the character of my daughter over the years, with each letter representing different characteristics of her personality (A is for Affectionate, B is for Brave, etc.) It’s an ongoing documentation project with many letters as she grows and changes over time.

Birch Tree is the first product in a line of products inspired by that album, and those stories that define us. This one is representative of stories of adventure (for the letter Aa). I love the different textures, the touch of nature, and I had so much fun creating the elements here.

Petals {volume one} is far and away my most popular product. It was released to coordinate with the May 2012 BYOC and the palette is versatile and happy. It was inspired by paper layering and I think it has appealed to scrappers because it is a unique hand-crafted product that can mesh well with various styles of scrapping. They can be used as borders or trims, as accents or showpieces. And they are a lot of fun.
