I tell people that I’m artistic but I’m not crafty, and I don’t like making a mess, so I prefer to create things on my computer. Since I don’t have children or a husband, I don’t really feel drawn to doing typical scrapbook layouts about my life, but decorating my house is one of my passions, and I’m also very nostalgic. Put those things together and that explains why I felt compelled to create a piece of artwork using my childhood dolls, Malibu Ken and Malibu P.J. This is my kind of scrapbooking!

DesignerLO

started
I started designing for the paper scrapbook industry back around 2000 when a company contacted me to do some sticker illustrations for them. By word-of-mouth I obtained more clients and became so busy I had to quit my job and start a graphic design business in my home. In 2009, one of my clients asked me to prepare some of their files for a digital site and that’s when I discovered a world I hadn’t been aware of…digital scrapbooking! I realized that if I had my own shop I could design my own products, rather than design for others. I have always enjoyed designing for my clients and wouldn’t trade that for anything, but having my own shop is such a wonderful creative outlet that I’m happy to have that opportunity, as well.

inspired
I’m inspired by things I see in magazines and catalogs or by bits of ephemera I pick up at flea markets. I’ve also been inspired by Pinterest, which isn’t a huge surprise!

tools

Computer: I have a MacPro Tower with 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor and 6 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM memory and a 22″ ViewSonic monitor.
Program: I work with Photoshop and Illustrator and sometimes InDesign, but that’s mostly used when I’m doing work for my clients. I’m still hoping to upgrade to the latest version of CS, but until then I’m satisfied with CS4. I have to be!
Camera: My camera is a Sony Mavica that I’ve had for about seven years. It works for what I need. I’m not a huge photography buff so I just leave it on all the automatic settings.

Anything Else: I use a WACOM Intuos 5 Touch that I had to buy recently because I made the mistake of leaving a glass of water by my computer and my curious cat tipped it over on my older WACOM tablet. I tried to save it, but the water had had plenty of time to work it over and it was a goner!

I also have a large format Epson scanner which I LOVE. Epson makes the best scanners and printers, in my opinion. They’re so user-friendly.
tipstricks
I don’t really have a tip or trick, but I would like to just throw out that “back up your stuff” reminder! I think that needs to be said every once in awhile.

favorite
I love the muted colors of Happy Life and the whimsical feel of the elements. I enjoyed creating that kit along with all the coordinating products…neutral patterned papers, word art, solid papers and journaling cards. And I’m a sucker for patterns so I especially enjoyed making all the patterned papers.

Digi Scrapbooking Must-Haves and Nice-to-Haves

Musts

The Basics

To be a digital scrapbooker, there are a few basics that you need to let you be creative and capture your memories for the long-term. (Luckily, most of them are items that you would have owned even if you weren’t a digital scrapbooker.)

Computer, Internet Access and Virus Protection

It’s pretty clear that you will need a computer to be a digital scrapbooker. Although I hear rumours about scrapbooking on tablets, I think the vast majority of digital scrapbookers use either a desktop computer or laptop.

Naturally, to be able to print your pages and purchase online digital supplies, you will need Internet access. And, you’ll want to protect your computer from online dangers with some sort of virus protection.

Check out:

Scrapbooking Software

Digital scrapbookers need software that allows them to work with image files and layers.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements (PSE) is very popular among beginning and seasoned scrapbookers. Most scrapbooking tutorials are written for PSE users. The current PSE is about $99.
  • Adobe Photoshop (PS) is the pro version of PSE. Scrapbookers who also want enhanced abilities for photo editing and some tools for the manipulation of images (like very advanced drop shadow customization) use PS. The newest version is based on a subscription of $29.99 per month (for the student edition).
  • There are also options like Paint Shop Pro ($49) and Foto Fusion ($119), but there are fewer digital scrapbooking-specific resources for these programs.

Remember to check for discounts, like student and teacher discounts, before you buy or upgrade. The savings can be substantial!

Check out:

Digital Scrapbooking Supplies

Shopping for supplies is one of the best parts of being a digi scrapbooker! It’s so fun to see all the new goodies in the stores. Of course I am biased, but I think that a The Digi Files membership is one of the best ways to discover new products and designers. And we can’t forget the Funtastic Friday posts where TDD shares awesome new releases from around the digi community.

Camera

You could scrapbook without photos, but since the majority of digi scrapbookers use photos on their pages, I’m including a camera as a basic tool for digi scrapbookers. There are many types (and price points) for cameras, whether it’s a point-and-shoot camera or dSLR.

Your smartphone camera is also an excellent source of photos for scrapbooking. More and more people are relying on their smartphone as their main family camera.

Check out:

Back-up Plan

The truth is that your computer will fail at one point and you do not want to lose those precious photos or your expensive digital supply catalogue! There are several ways to back up your photos and digital supplies:

  • Back-up to an external hard-drive (EHD)
  • Copy files to memory sticks or discs
  • Use an online back-up company like BackBlaze, CrashPlan or Mozy, to name a few.

Ideally, you’ll have one working copy of your files, one on-site back-up (at your house) and one remote (not at your house) back-up.

Check out:

The Nice-to-Haves

Once you’ve been digitally scrapbooking for a while, you might find that the basics are no longer enough and you need more advanced tools. Actually, some of these things that I didn’t need at all when I first started scrapbooking are now on my “I couldn’t scrap without it” list!

Photo Management Software

If you don’t take a lot of photos, the simple system folder structure might work for you. Just organizing by Year, Month, and Day is a great start to being able to find and retrieve photos.

If you are working with a lot a photos, photo management software is a real time-saver. There are a few options, like ACDSee, iPhoto (Mac), and Adobe Lightroom. I’m a Lightroom user. I use it for:

  • Key word tagging my photos for easier retrieval
  • Non-destructive edits of my photos
  • Batch editing photos

In fact, Lightroom has become where I edit about 95% of my photos, almost entirely replacing Photoshop for photo-editing.

Check out:

Digital Supply Organization Software

If I could go back in time, I would have picked up software to organize my digital supplies long before I did. Being able to easily access my supplies has saved me so much time and I think made me a better scrapper. And, of course, it helps me use all those wonderful digi products!

My digital organization software is ACDSee. Other people like Adobe Lightroom. And others are able to make their system folder structure work for them.

Check out:

Font Management Software

Digital scrapbookers can accumulate a hundreds of fonts over the years. Not only is it a chore to have to scroll through that many fonts to find the “right” one for a page, having so many fonts installed can actually slow down your scrapbooking software and your whole computer. A font management software like Font Xplorer helps by allowing you to keep all your fonts but to uninstall those that you don’t use on a regular basis. You can easily go into the font manager and install fonts that were previously uninstalled. Font managers sometimes have capability like being able to group fonts by type (e.g. handwriting, cut-out fonts, all caps fonts, etc.).

Check out:

UnZip Software

Prolific digital scrapbooking supply purchasers appreciate the the ability to open dozens of ZIP files into a preferred location and automatically delete the ZIP. Such a time-saver!

Check out:

A Place to Jot Down Memories

We’ve talked a lot about how to capture memories to scrapbook them later. Here are a few that I’m familiar with:

Sources for Inspiration

I hope you think of The Daily Digi as one of your best sources for scrapbooking inspiration! Also check out:

I’m amazed by all of the great memory-keeping tools and products available now. What else would you add to the list?

Lift it again!

Our readers LOVE the Play it Again feature here at The Daily Digi and they really enjoy seeing all the different ways to scrap the same memory. You can see some of the past posts here. This time, I thought it would be fun to do something really different and illustrate all the different ways there are to scraplift a layout. I’ve written about scraplifting here before, but it’s something that I always need to remind myself about. It’s perfectly OK to use the inspiration you find from other people’s pages!

Here’s a layout from one of our own Daily Digi team members (Melissa Lewis) that I’ve been wanting to scraplift – I’ve pinned it here and the gallery link is here.

melissa Lewis layout

Supplies: Gina Miller Happy, Happy, Joy Joy templates, Basic Kraft papers, Michelle Godin Snarky Snippets, Emily Merritt Tiny Quotes, Amy Martin Perfect Amount of Mess, Kaye Winiecki A Little Edgy vol 2, CD Muckosky Markerific, Font is The Branch

The assignment for this challenge was to scraplift Melissa’s fun layout in some way. It could be a literal or “loose interpretation” type of a scraplift. I love seeing all the ways that this great page can be lifted!

It’s ok to lift your own layout

How fun is this that Melissa scraplifted her own page?! I love this one just as much as the original! All the bright and colorful cards of word art give this page such a fun feeling.

Melissa Lewis scraplifts herself

Supplies: Little Butterfly Wings The Wonders of Motherhood, Jenn Barrette They Say It’s Your Birthday kraft paper, fonts are Ck Mama and The Reed

Build on the original inspiration

Daily Digi team member Ronnie was obviously inspired by combining word art pieces as well. I love her take on this challenge and the great masculine touches she added to her layout!

Ronnie scraplifts Melissa Lewis

Supplies: KarlaDudley  -DigiEssentials, Angie Kovacs –  Believe In Me, Chelle Creations – Yeehaw, Just Jaimee – Story Starter April, Kaye Winiecki – Ordinarily Special, Little Butterfly Wings – Twenty Four Seven, Geek Like Me, Mye De Leon – Happiness lies within, Thats my kid, Michelle Godin – Build your wings, Pink Reptile Design – Wanderlust, Diane Rigdon – Total Gamer, Tracie Stroud – I am beautiful, Wild blueberry Ink – The Good Life

Scraplifting gives you a headstart

Britanee (britaneejean) said “I LOVE journal cards right now so this layout was a dream for me to scraplift! I loved all the quotes & wordart AND the composition so that’s what I chose to lift. I love the end result.”

I have to say that I absolutely love this page also. What a pretty combination of papers, wordart, & a darling photo!

britaneejean

Supplies: Balancing Act Collection by Bella Gypsy, All Stitched Up Vol 3 by Tracie Stroud, Big Stamped Alpha by WM[2] Designs, DJB Britanee’s Thin Pen

Scraplifting can give you a framework for creativity

Hilary used the framework of Melissa’s page to inspire her own creative interpretation. She filled the blocks with patterned papers and then added some tilted stacks of papers and embellishments. What a great lift!

MyEverything

Supplies: Wish Flowers by Wishing Well Creations and Dawn by Design. Alphas: Wish Flowers by Wishing Well Creations and Dawn by Design, and Markerific by CD Muckosky. Photo Actions: Simply Thankful by The Digi Chick’s, and Coffee Time ‘Spiced Chai’ by Charm Box Studio. Fonts: Prissy Frat Boy

Your page will be unique because you made it

I love lifting pages because even if you use the exact same ingredients, your page will turn out different because it about your own memories. I used the same template and word art snippets by the same designer (different kit), but my layout feels like my own. I’m so glad that Melissa helped me make it happen!

Katie the Scrapbook Lady bookworm

Supplies: Gina Miller Happy Happy Joy Joy template, Michelle Godin Book snippets, Michelle Godin I’d rather be reading, Kaye Winiecki just one more page, Georgia font.

Give scraplifting a try!

Whether you decide to lift Melissa’s layout, or pick another page that has caught your eye, make a goal to do some lifting of your own. You will learn a lot about your own scrapping style and you might even surprise yourself. I’d love to see your results so feel free to leave a link to your project in the comments. I know you will have fun and you will have something special to enjoy as a result. Give it a try!

Angie Kovacs: Believe in Me

DesignerLogo

I am excited to welcome Angie to The Digi Files this month! Angie has a bold, bright, and graphic style that I adore! She also includes a surprise bit of shabby or vintage goodness that all works really well together.  Making a great alpha with patterned papers is not easy, but it’s something Angie does very well!  I love that she says designing came from her inability to just have hobbies (see below for more). Our team created some gorgeous layouts with this kit and really had fun working it.  Let’s take a closer look at “Believe in Me” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

Name
My name is Angie (because that wasn’t obvious :P) and I live just outside Cleveland, Ohio. I have 5 kids, 1 husband, and 1 dog, which seems like 1 too many of something most days. When I’m not at my desk reading Facebook over and over again, err I mean designing, I do a bit of running. I started out running to lose weight, and have sense done 8 marathons, so I guess it’s safe to say I love it. I even got certified to coach it and now I coach beginners up to half marathons. My next exciting adventure is going to be a dog running service. I figure I love running, and so do dogs, so why not put these things together and make a business out of it?

I’m lucky enough to be able to be some amazing creative teams (I pinch myself often), so I have a buffet of fun stuff to play with. I love all my pages equally (more than I can say for the kids some days!) so it’s hard to pick a favorite, but this one I did recently stands out a bit. I love the pops of color on the white background. And, of course, I love that photo of my baby boy.

DesignerLO

started
I started paper scrapping completely against my will in 2002. A friend had signed up for a Scrapbooking 101 class, and didn’t want to go alone. She offered to pay my way if I went with her, so I begrudgingly agreed. That was pretty much that.

I started dabbling in digital in 2006ish, I think. I was active on a site that embraced both mediums, and I was given the opportunity to try out some products. At first, I was positive I’d never give up my paper scrapping. Today, I have a room full of it that I haven’t seen in years.

The progression into designing was born of my inability to just have hobbies. I always find a way to turn them into jobs!

inspired
All the cliche stuff you can possibly imagine… color, theme, holiday. There’s no telling when and where inspiration will hit. I try hard to only create when I’m really feeling it, and just hope that doesn’t lead to a 6 month span without a release.

tools
Computer: Windows 7, 8 gb RAM, AMD Phenom II X4 940 Processor – I don’t even know what I just said after the RAM part.
Program: Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator CS4. Trying to talk myself into the Adobe Cloud subscription, since I’m a college student (in my spare time – HA) and can get it for $20/month right now.
Camera: Canon 30D. I’d like a newer one, but I have no excuse for getting one, really.
Anything Else: I have a dinky little Wacom (4×6) that I only use when I’m doodling something, and not always even then. I still rock the mouse out half the time.

tipstricks
A decent photograph can go a long way toward making you love the pages you are creating. That isn’t to say that I don’t love the crappy ones, but I do notice that the pages I love the best are the ones with the higher quality photographs. You don’t need to go all crazy taking photography classes and learning to shoot in manual mode or all of that. Just being a bit more aware of how the light is shining on your subject or how still you hold the camera can help quite a bit. Maybe kick the dirty laundry out of the way in the background first (unless that’s just me that needs to do that?), or shut the door that leads to the messy room behind the subject. Little things here and there can make a big difference! I have a certain spot in my house that has more light than the rest, so that is the spot I try to take pictures if I can’t get outside where the real light is. I also don’t hesitate to make a photo black and white if it doesn’t work with the kit I’m using, or if there are just too many colors in the picture to distract me from the beautiful faces. I love black and white anyway, though, so it’s not much of a compromise.

favorite
I love this because it’s so ME. I work out 6-7 days a week and love it, so this was obviously a labor of love. Also, the title makes me laugh and I start singing that song every time I look at it. I also love bright and fun colors.

Happy thoughts and quotes for Fathers

Happy Father Day

Little Butterfly Wings – World’s Best Dad. Black Jack font.

We want to wish a happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there (including our own)! We hope you enjoy the day making or remembering memories with the special fathers in your own life.

If you are looking for any quotes to use on a Father’s Day card or a digital scrapbook layout, here are some of my favorites:

The greatest thing a father can do to his children, is to love their mother.- Anjaneth Garcia Untalan

Tag! You’re it!

using tags on digital layouts

Quirky Twerp retrospective tags. Black Jack font.

We love showing you all sorts of ways to use all the fun goodies that come with digital scrapbooking kits. Tags can be one of the most useful supplies for a digital scrapbooker and there are so many creative ways to use them!

One of my favorite ways to use a tag is to include the date on it. Such a simple, but stunning way to add that important detail.

A tag is the perfect mini-canvas for a design element on your page. A monogram, a flower, or any shape will be right at home on a tag.

Tags add visual interest to a page and can break up a linear composition with a natural angle.

Tags can be layered just like any other embellishment to add fun designs to the page.

Tags are a natural spot for journaling and titles and they will naturally catch your eye’s attention.

Quite often, designers will include tags as part of their digital kits. There are also some individually packaged tags if you want to boost your stash a bit. Here are some of my recent favorites: (all images are linked)
