Cilenia Curtis: Changes

Cilenia joins us this month for the very first time an brings her Art/Life Journaling style designs with her.  I desire to inspire others, through her designs, to become more in tune with their inner voice and express it through scrapbooking or visual journaling. I think she sounds like a super fun Nanna too!  I found the colors and textures in her collection to The Digi Files super inspiring. The painted/printed papers, the banners, the fun journal pages that are included are so unique and some of them are from her real life art journals.  Let’s take a closer look at “Changes” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month! Here are some layouts created using Cilenia Curtis’s contribution:

Hi there happy people! My name is Cilenia, pronounced Sa-leen-na, and I’m a Mixed Media Artist with an obsession for papers, fabrics and inks while even mixing it up with computer graphics. I have been drawing on a computer since 1986 and creating art even longer with visual art journaling and art quilts. Somewhere in the middle there I started mixing it all up, and now I pull all my various art forms into each other to create unique one of a kind pieces. I am a Mama of 5 grown children and a Nana of 8 and all of them enjoy art as much as I do. It isn’t unusual to find us in the loft art studio gettin’ messy!

My dream is to help people become more in tune with their inner voice and use digital art for self expression along with creating scrapbooking pages for their stories for what I call Life Journaling. It is mostly about the journey deep within ourselves and expressing it through Art-Life Journaling.

I have always done art for affirmations and healing. Some call it ‘She Art’ today, but for me… it has always been more than that. It was my inner voice speaking from my soul thru my art dolls or dancers. I continue to do these today digitally and in my mixed media projects and it’s a form of stress release and an expression of my inner self. I would encourage everyone to create for themselves, along with memory keeping. It doesn’t always have to be a photo of a memory, but can be about capturing the feelings of the moment and expressing through art no matter if created digitally, in mixed media or with a box of crayons. It’s all about the play and enjoying the process.

I have been scrapbooking, or as I like to call it, Life Journaling for as long as I can remember. In the late 1980s I started drawing on the computer and printing journaling and simplistic art onto papers to include in my scrapbooking. I guess it was called Hybrid, but I didn’t know that. I started to do more digital scrapping and art around 2004 but working full time and raising 5 children took most of my time and it wasn’t until late 2009 when I was laid off work did I really dive into it full throttle. I never looked back. Today I am still experimenting on how to bring my real life art into my digital art and am growing and learning every day. My styles have evolved, and will continue to evolve, as I nestle into my own unique art style of a cross between art journaling and scrapbooking.

I am inspired by everything! Literally! It can come from music, a tiny flower, an emotional experience or playing in my art room with children. I am so inspired by children as they have such a playful attitude towards art and freely express without any boundaries. As I teach them, I also practice the muse of asking myself, “What color do you feel like today?” From there, the sky is the limit.

Computer: I work on a 27″ iMac with duel a monitors set up and 16GB RAM. I’ve worked this way for 20 years and couldn’t live without the two monitors. My second monitor is a swivel type and it usually has my mail and text files opened while my iMac is where I work my graphics. I’m a total computer geek and create or modify all my programing for my sites. I’m still waiting on Santa on the iPad.
Program: I work in Adobe Masters CS6 and AutoCAD for my graphics and use ScreenFlow for all my videos.
Camera: My iPhone is my primary camera now along with a Canon PowerShot. I had a minolta x-700 but it was stollen years ago.
Anything Else: I have a 36″ Pen Plotter for large printing and work with a Wacom Bamboo tablet drawing directly on the computer, but have my sites on the new Wacom Cintuq. Hint hint Santa!
My favorite tip for scrappers has to be about Shadows. I’m asked all the time about mine and how to recreate. It’s not always about your style settings, but more about how they should appear as in real life. Look at shadows around you, study how papers, books and objects cast shadows and where the light source is coming from. Observe how they relate to each other and how the objects are layered or overhanging each other. If you study your real life shadows and tweak your program styles, you will have a richer, more realistic layout with a lot more depth to them. I have several articles and videos on this subject on my blog and invite any questions you may have

Color Play 2 has to be my fav! I was playing in my art studio with colors and flowers trying to decide what colors for my accent wall and this was a happy accident. I fell in love with them! Of course I had to bring in my florals and butterflies again with soft textured watercolors. These ended up in many of my art quilts at the time too. My wall ended up being the light slate color with a touch of the blue
My Follow Your Art Growth kit has been my all time most popular kit sold. I think it was because I combined my love of flowers and butterflies with a soft vintage twist but still with a modern feel to it. It represented the birth of Summer to me and I think that carried in the feel of the kit.
