Not Interesting Enough?

We live in a family of daily and weekly routines. I know there are many families like mine, where the day-to-day doesn’t vary much.

From a scrapbooking perspective: What memories should we capture then? Can we maintain momentum on a project like P365 or Project 52? I think so!

I do a weekly double-page spread using the simple gridded style of pocket scrapbooking. Here are some ways that I’ve documented our routines and daily happenings in our family.

Incorporating the Random

I try to take photos most days of the week, but February is historically my slowest photo month. This year was no exception. Some weeks, like the one below, I only had a handful of photos to use. Worse still, I didn’t take many notes about the week – even scanning my email and Facebook and phone didn’t help. I managed to put together this weekly layout by relying on a few random lists and quotes:

2013-02-17-23-2pg-web

Supplies: Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens, Pagekraft by One Little Bird, Kraft Edition Project Life

I filled out the week with ideas like:

  • Movies I had seen in the year to date
  • A list of 10 movies I love
  • A few random quotes from my kids
  • Noting how much we love pasta in the winter (since that is one thing I did take a picture of during the week)

I don’t take the idea of Project 52 too literally – I scrap a weekly spread, but every photo and piece of journaling doesn’t have to be perfectly tied to the week. If it relates to my life in the general time period, I’m okay with including it. For example, I think there is value in noting the movies I’ve watched to date. It’s not something I want to document each and every week, but a round-up on the occasional weekly layout is a nice reminder for the future.

Rely on Photos to Document the Now

I must have been feeling bad about the general lack of February photos, because at the very end of February and into March, my volume of photo-taking dramatically improved.

Supplies: Pockets No. 6 Stitched by Valorie Wibbens, Pagekraft by One Little Bird Designs, Kraft Edition Project Life by Tiffani Smith, Black & White: Labeled by Michele Godin, Date It by Penny Springmann, Doodlings 1 by Emily Merritt, Get Artsy by Jenn Barrette

These were weeks where “nothing” happened – no birthdays, anniversaries, job changes, house moves, babies born, or any other one of life’s major milestones. Just regular weeks in the life of our family.

To document the weeks, I took photos of the little moments:

  • Us on our commute
  • My daughter modeling clothes at the mall
  • The result of a major snowstorm
  • The before and after of cleaning out my pantry
  • A few incredibooth (an iPhone app) shots
  • My kids being silly
  • The messy spots and neat spots in my home
  • Food prepared and enjoyed

I like these pages. They’re some of my favourites in my album because they’re so *us*, right now.

Other People’s Stories

During the week below, I borrowed the photos and story of the hockey game from my husband and it takes up 1/4 of the weekly layout.

2013-03-10-16-2pg-web

Supplies: Pockets Stitched No. 6 by Valorie Wibbens, Pagekraft by One Little Bird Designs, Midnight Edition by Liz Tamanoha

My project is about my family, but it’s clearly in my voice. Sometimes though, big things happen to my husband or my children, and I want to share them. I ask to borrow copies of photos from friends and family for situations where I don’t have any of my own and most of the time they’re happy to provide them to me. For journaling, I’ll ask them about what happened and then retell the story on a journaling card. I enjoy how these stories add context to the overall project album.

Note the Little Moments

I won’t always be the mom to two small children. Already I can see that the little baby days went by in the blink of an eye. I suspect the years of raising school agers will go by just as quickly and then I’ll have teenagers. As much as I may wish to try, I can’t stop the clock. The only thing I can do is note the moments and savour them.

Name
Hi I’m Yin and I’m a wife, mom, and addicted to creating art and life story telling through digiscrapping! I live in the sunny tropical island city of Singapore in South East Asia and just love how scrapbooking and memory keeping connects with all of us even though we are from diverse cultures and backgrounds. I’m married for 19 years to my wonderful husband who started me on my scrapbooking journey and we have two teenage sons who are sixteen and fourteen. My layouts have evolved with my family from cute pages of my boys and their various exploits and to my teenagers and their adventures, and of course our life as a family. And I have found that I never run out of stuff and memories to create pages for!

layout
During our mid year school holidays in June last year I was inspired by Ali Edwards’ Summer Manisfesto idea and my family came up with our own Holiday Manisfesto and it was such fun intentionally making our holidays count. This layout was designed to capture each manisfesto as they were accomplished and as you can see we had a great time. It was also when I first tried Instagram so this layout was made with those in mind. Same as templates 336 to 339 included in this months’ TDFs! By the way this template is a free download still available on my blog.

started
Literally, we were at our local library when dh picked up a copy of Creating Keepsakes, handing it to me saying he thinks I might be interested in this(!) I was hooked. I enjoyed paper scrapping for a few months, then discovered digiscrapping and loved how easily I can create beautiful pages at minimal cost. At one point I tried designing kits but I was far more interested in creating my own layouts and memories. Soon I decided to make templates out of my own layouts to support my own digiscrapping hobby, selling from my little blog store in 2008, and unbelievably, I am now at Template 341 🙂

inspired
Our lives, adventures and photos, of course. And almost anything, from the web, advertisements, magazines, to colors, patterns I see around me everyday.

tools
Computer: I am on a Lenovo idea centre (with built in 21″ monitor) running on Windows 7 with 8 GB.
Program: I only use my trusty Adobe Photoshop CS4!
Camera: For capturing daily memories and moments I use almost entirely my iphone 4 these days! Events and our travel photos are mostly captured by my Dh using his Canon S90. We’ve been on the S90 for more than 5 years and dh is itching to upgrade but the S90 photos are still brilliant and giving us no excuse to do so, lol.
Anything Else: I have a Bamboo tablet which I rarely use though.

tipstricks
I always have tons of photos on my layouts so embellishments are kept to a minimum. Instead I rely on two areas to create interest in my layouts. Firstly, a striking title, and secondly, color coordination and contrast. For titles, the easiest way is to use a combination of an alpha (large and bold) and type (use a contrasting font). Color coordination and contrast is where I think it makes or breaks a layout. I spend the longest time looking for a background that will bring out my photos, and not smother them, nor blending in so much the photos look bland. Usually a neutral background that contrasts with the main colors in the layout works. Sometimes I will pick out an accent color in the photos I want to highlight and pick a background in a similar color or color family to match that. It’s worth the time experimenting!

favorite
This template set is my favorite only because it was based on an album I created for my dh for his birthday. That album is my personal favorite. On the left pages I used coordinating patterned paper with a quote or journaling that said what I felt about each aspect of my man and on the right added accompanying photos. It is a very special book for both of us.

DesFav
popular
In the last year this set of Half-Monthly templates have become my most popular product. I use them and the accompanying Template set 317 to scrap my everyday 365 photos. Each template fits 15 to 16 photos, (half a month), and has space for a block of journalling. I used them to capture the whole of our 2012, and printed them out to slot into my physical Project Life album. (You can see examples on my blog.) I think they are popular because they are so easy to use, and in a short time we can have a summary overview of our weeks and months!

If This Then That

A long time ago on The Digi Show, Peppermint’s pick was If This Then That, IFTTT.com. I loved the idea of the site, but didn’t get around to using it until a couple of weeks ago. But once I got in there, I thought, “Once again, Peppermint’s pick has changed my life.”

With this site, I can set up just about any action to occur when triggered by an event. So far, I’ve set up:

  • having an email sent to me when someone posts on their blog, (that doesn’t have an email subscription available)
  • having a text sent to me when I get an email from a specific email address
  • having a post made to my Capturing Magic Facebook page WITH a picture in it when a new post is made on the site

Some cool things that can be done with IFTTT:

  • if I post a new photo to Instagram, have it sent to DropBox too
  • text me the weather every morning
  • save any Instagram photo I like to Evernote
  • back up text messages to Evernote

You can find recipes people have created by browsing here. What about you? Are you using IFTTT? What are you doing with it?

I’m very excited to have Juliana joining us again in The Digi Files this month! Juliana joins us with a more sophisticated collection than last time and it is super gorgeous! It’s always to see how a designers asthetic changes through the years (especially when they have been designing for a long time) and Juliana has come into her own in the shabby and vintage style. Beautiful floral papers and unique, aged elements, and so fun to scrap with! Let’s take a closer look at “Truly, Madly, Deeply” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

I love to have time to create my own digital scrapbooking pages! But with all the work, I rarely have time to sit and only create! This page, I created in that moment – that I take exclusively for my hobby! I love splats, masks, wordstrips…I’m not a clean scrapper, but what I learn is that we have to organize our layout so it will be balanced! If I use a patterned background, with a lot of things, so, it’s best I don’t use a lot of elements… Or if I have a solid background, I can use more elements and layers. In that page, I didn’t use a lot of elements just because I have a great patterned background! Oh…I miss creating my own pages! I wish I could to that every single day!

started
I started in digital. I used to work as a web designer when I first met my friend, who introduce me to scrapbooking. So, we decided to work together, first, searching for good freebies and posting in our blog. Then, we realized that we should try to design too. So, we created our own freebies and some months later, our own products! We did that for some years and in 2009, I decided to continue working, but by my own. I think was a great decision, because that way I could find my real style and create what I love, in my time! I’m so thankful for each one who have helped me in this journey!

inspired
Oh…a lot of things…! Sometimes, it’s a color scheme. I see some colors and come in my mind a theme and elements that will make a good kit! Other times, music inspires… I’m addicted in music! I do everything listening to music! I often spend 1 day or more, listening the same song when I’m creating the kit! haha… My kit Fly Away From Here, for example, the entire time I needed to create this one, I listened to the Aerosmith’s song! 🙂 But a lot of things can inspire me: a photo, a page, some things that happen in my life, Pinterest…!

tools
Computer: My computer is old, I need to buy another one! haha
Mine is a laptop, I use Windows 7, 4GB RAM and 500 HD… But I have a external hard drive too, of 1TB!
Plus, a wacom! I don’t use mouse, just my wacom, I can’t live without it!
Program: Since I don’t work only with scrapbooking, I need other programs too! So, I use Photoshop CS6, LR 4, Corel Draw X6 (I know…I know…Illustrator is much better, but I’m used to work in Corel… LOL)…Dreamweaver CS5… Basically that!
Camera: I bought a new camera and a new lens! My goal this year, is learn more about photography. My new camera is not the best, but is better than my old camera!
Today I have a Nikon D-5100 and 4 lenses: 18-55mm; 17-50mm 2.8; 35mm 1.8; 50mm 1.8! It’s in my wishlist the 85mm 1.4 and a Lensbaby – that I already bought, I’m just waiting to arrive!
Anything Else: I have a bamboo create medium and an old bamboo small! I’m using my old wacom, but I can’t wait to use my new one! I’m just waiting, cause my house is in rennovations, so, when we finish, I’ll have a new office, I’ll buy my new computer and use my new wacom!

tipstricks
I love to play with blending when I create my papers! I think it’s a great thing to try, not only when you create a paper, but in a page too! Sometimes you can use white spaces and play with some blending! I love to use “overlay”, “multiply” and “, “color burn and “screen” mode! As scrapper, I really love to use stamps and splats! It’s an amazing way to add a finishing touch!

favorite
It’s so difficult choose only 1 favorite kit! This one is one of my favorite kits! First, cause I wanted to create a kit with this theme for a long time… then, I created it with one of my favorite designers – Kristin Cronin-Barrow. I love the colors, the theme… It was so fun create this collab! When I was creating the wordart, I laughed a lot with each phrase! I’m not a mom, but I’m a daughter and I know that life as mom is not all roses and sunshine all the time…! So, I wanted to talk about that and I couldn’t have a better partner to create with!

popular
This is one of my favorite too! And the most popular! I LOVE this theme: travel! Who doesn’t love it? Visit new places, meet new people, experience new cultures! That’s one of the themes that I most love to create about! And I think, customers love this theme too, that’s why this is the best seller! Everyone has amazing memories of trips to scrap about it!

Welcome the Designers of TDF#53

Wow! April just flew by and we we are already in MAY!? I’m looking forward to warmer weather and sunshine in my part of the world!

I wanted to say THANK YOU to all of our members and readers that left comments yesterday!!  There were SO MANY great things shared in them; from someone becoming a member for the first time and creating their very first digi layout, to the long-time member/reader! THANK YOU to everyone that took time to share your thoughts! Katie and I both read every single comment and it filled our hearts with so much JOY! THANK YOU!!!

I am SUPER EXCITED to share The Digi Files issue #53 with all of you! Many of these designers have contributed before and I’m excited to introduce a couple of brand-new-to-the-files designers as well. They ALL created some BEAUTIFUL collections for us to scrap our memories with. They really out did themselves and worked so hard and we are THRILLED!

We have SEVEN full size products, never released in digiland before for only $7.50 total (less when you become an annual member)!  Some of the products are actually larger than ONE product for the designers and will be broken up when added to their store. It’s an UNBELIEVEABLE deal and the BEST deal in digital scrapbooking! Here is a look at the designers for this month:

Our members love “Daily Digi Day”! Many of the annual members have already been downloading for a few hours because they automatically get access when the calendar changes to a new month. Here’s what our members said in the comments yesterday:

Loved all the kits this month (I say that every month). Excited for tomorrow to see what the new goodies are. I am starting my third year of TDD and still lovin’ it. Thanks for all you do to bring us such awesome dinginess!!! – Connie

This has been my first month of subscribing and I am loving it! Originally I bought it because of Project Life, however now I have had a chance to see everything that is included each month – I am excited!! What a create concept 😀 – Diane D.

I really love the combination of kits each month.  There are always favorite designers, some designers I have never heard of, and designers I’ve always wanted to try but really weren’t my style so I haven’t bought anything.  It gives me a chance to play and try something new.  🙂 – Jen L

I signed up this month to a yearly membership to the daily digi.  I can’t believe all if the goodies I (received)  for less than $7/month.  I hit the jackpot – Moped

PS: Congratulations to the FOURTEEN random winners selected from yesterday’s comments, each person won $10 in product from one of last month’s designers. Be sure to check out the Rafflecopter widget in yesterday’s post to see if you won! All winners will receive their prize via the email listed in Rafflecopter within 48 hours.
