Jumpstart Designs: From Your Heart

DesignerLogo

A few months ago, Jumpstart designs was a new-to-me designer, but it didn’t take long for me to see her artistic abilities. She includes plenty of doodles and fun elements in her kits. I also love her plaids, stripes, and dots on her papers! The fact that she uses various shades of lime in many of her kits, brings a smile to my face.  Let’s take a closer look at “Daydreamin'” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

I guess you could call me a SAHM, although my children are mostly grown now. My oldest daughter is married and expecting my third grandchild in a few months, and my two youngest children are both in their first year of college. I have worked professionally most of my life, but I now get to stay home and enjoy helping with my grandchildren. I turned 50 this last year and the reality that I won’t always be 30 finally set in. My age never bothered me until I received my first AARP card in the mail this year. Ugh! I have always been involved with creative endeavors, so finding digi has been a perfect fit. I get to stay home and do what I love!

I started out as a paper scrapper about 15 years ago. I have a huge stash (more like a store) that is now collecting major dust! In May of 2010, a friend introduced me to digi, and I have been hooked ever since! I started out as a customer and was soon invited to a few creative teams. About a year later, the owner of Pickleberrypop asked if I’d be interested in becoming a designer. Me? Seriously? The only thing I had to reply on was the standard drop-shadow command in PS Elements, and my “mad clustering skills.” I told her I knew nothing about designing (which she quickly found out I wasn’t joking about), but with a little coaching by her and a few other designers, I made my debut with a few sets of templates in July 2011. By the end of the year, I was venturing in to kits, and am fortunate to find myself doing pretty well. I still claim to be pretty digi-stupid, but am getting better every day and feel fortunate that my fans are hanging in there with me during my learning curve! LOL

inspired
Color! I find a color scheme I like and go from there. I don’t think I’ve established a typical “Sheri” style yet because different moods tend to inspire different kit styles.

tools
Computer: I run Windows 7 on a gaming computer with lots of video ram, 8 GB of RAM, and four (yes four) 27″ monitors. I hate popping back and forth between windows, so that’s the one thing I’ve spoiled myself with…. lots of design and work space.

Program: I use CS5 Photoshop and Illustrator (still trying to learn both), Dreamweaver for newsletters, and Artrage. I Skype a lot with other designer friends. It’s the closest I can get to the good old paper scrapping days when I used to get together monthly with my scrapping girlfriends.

Camera: At the moment… I don’t have one. I had a really nice digi camera but my hubby dropped it in the river during a fishing trip in Canada a few months ago. I’m not sure how he thought he could negotiate a fishing pole, a float tube, AND a camera (obviously, he couldn’t), and my camera lost that battle! I am now researching and saving up for a new one. Any suggestions?

Anything Else: I have a Bamboo tablet but have a new Intuos one on my wish list!

tipstricks
Whatever you do, do it from your heart and do it with a positive attitude. It’s easy to find negativity, but if you focus your efforts in finding the products and people that you genuinely enjoy, and compliment others for what they bring to the table too, then you will always find joy in this hobby. I am a huge believer in karma and firmly believe that my own success is a result of a positive attitude, great customer service, and a genuine love of this hobby.

I saw an image on the internet that inspired me to do a peacock look. I liked the colors and it fit my mood of the moment.

Inspired by YOU!

My mom and I were discussing digi scrapping the other day during one of our phone conversations and she asked me where she could go to see a lot of layouts. She’s been looking for inspiration now that she’s really started digi scrapping (go Mom!) and she wanted to look through a large pool of ideas. I quickly reminded her about the Digital Scrapbooking Inspiration Flickr group and she was amazed to find out that there are more than over ELEVEN THOUSAND layouts posted there. She literally said “WOW!” and I have to agree! We have almost 700 members posting inspiration creations in the group every single day!

Whenever I feel like I need a digi pick-me-up, I love to browse through the group. I always can find something to inspire me! Here are some pages that I love and hope to scraplift someday soon:

Polka dots, stripes, & chevron + a beautiful neutral background make this page a winner in my book. I love the darling photos and the journaling is fabulous!

This is My Favorite

I love the look of pocket scrapping pages and this two-page spread is just filled with wonderful details of everyday life!

familybees project life

This page displays a grid of photos in a wonderfully artsy way. I love the hinges, layers, and stitching used here.

crbsmith68

I admire those who are good at clustering because it really is an art form on it’s own. The grouping of elements is so fun here and the shadowing is really nice!

lynettew

It’s always fun to see a well done layout without any photos. It takes some creativity to pull this off and I love the snippets of words and paper strips on this layout.

neeceebee one little word

I adore shadow pictures and the speech bubble next to the photo is the perfect finishing touch. Great side cluster also!

elseep shadow

This page made me want to read the journaling and find out the story behind the map. I love layouts that draw me in like that and the design and journaling are just wonderful!

HVO you and me

I take a lot of photos so I loved seeing how so many pictures were included on this great layout. I bet everyone who celebrated Easter together loves looking at this page!

Tiff3fs Easter

This page has so many fabulous details! I love the collection of journaling cards paired with the cute girl and embellishments. So fun!

I’m always amazed at how a quick trip through the Flickr group lifts my spirits and gets me in the mood to digi scrap. Thank YOU for all the inspiration!

Digital Tape Tricks

stuck on digital tape at the daily digi

Just Jaimee January Storyteller kit and Eye Candy Washi Tape. Typewriter Scribbled font.

One of the easiest embellishments to use on a digital layout is a piece of digi tape. I love the look of Washi tape and it makes me so happy that I can pull a piece out of a computer folder any time I want to add some fun to a page. Unlike a physical roll of tape, I will never run out of tape in my digi stash! With so much tape love going on in the digi world right now, my guess is that you have some sitting on your hard drive right now. (hint, hint, there are plenty of pieces included in this month’s Digi Files!)

I love to use tape on my pages and I have found that they need very little shadowing. There have been times when I haven’t added any shadow at all, but I generally like to use the vellum shadow found in Traci Stroud’s shadow styles to get a subtle taped on look. I also highly recommend checking out Peppermint Granberg’s of One Little Bird Designs fantastic tutorial on her blog about making digital tape look more realistic. Once you have these simple little tricks up your sleeve, it’s just a matter of adding the tape to your layout. As always, the team here at The Daily Digi has some great tips and ideas to share:

This great layout by team member Van that consists of just washi tape and text.

Ronnie used digi tape on this page to draw the viewer’s eye to the title.

Team member Vicki created this fun layout. She says “Because of my paper roots, I prefer washi tape to be more transparent. I will change the opacity just a smidge, usually around 80%.”

Team member Kimberly Kalil loves using any kind of washi tape – physical or digital! Here, she used tape as the primary embellishment for a super simple page.

Hello. I’m Shirley. Wife to the talented and ever so handsome Joseph. Mother to the beautiful and independent 4-year-old Aubrey Rose.

When I left my job 4 years ago I was the Creative Director for the largest newspaper in the state but I found myself missing something. That’s when Aubrey Rose came into our lives and I decided to become a SAHM. The 10+ years I spent in corporate America didn’t come close to preparing me for this new job I had decided to take on. Now I spend my days watching Bubble Guppies and preparing my very independent 4 year old for school. I have learned to laugh at myself, I have learned patience and I have learned the meaning of unconditional love.

I spend my nights balancing my design with a very lonely husband and 4 even lonelier fur babies. Thankfully for me all 5 of them are very understanding.

PROJECT LIFE!!! I absolutely love this project and this year I was selected to be a part of Becky Higgin’s CT. I love that I can catch the little things and record them in the moment they happened.

I discovered digital scrapbooking when I was 8 months pregnant. I was due to give birth 2 days before my husband’s 30th birthday and I needed something special for him but would allow me to keep my feet up while I planned. That is when I discovered Shutterfly and their amazing photo albums. While browsing their gallery I saw a 30 things from 30 people on your 30th birthday album. I threw one together for my husband in 2 weeks and at the same time I discovered the amazing world of digital scrapbooking.

After a year of scrapbooking I was encouraged to enter Little Dreamer’s Designer Contest. I WON! I guess the rest is history.

Everything. I have created kits based on the color scheme of my shower curtain. I have created kits based on something funny my daughter has said. I keep a notebook with me at all times because I never know when inspiration will hit.

Computer: I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro both using Mountain Lion. I do most of my designing on the laptop because it is new and packs some power.

GET ORGANIZED. Its amazing how much faster things go when you have your photos or supplies in one place and organized. I love to organize my supplies using iPhoto and my I have a massive organization system for photos. It may seem like a daunting task when you start but it will make a huge difference.

These templates were created to make Project 365 as easy as possible. I created 52 templates already dated with spots for both pictures and journaling. All the use has to do is open and add their information. These are shutterfly ready and allow for the use to replace papers and colors. These are special because they take the work out of P365 but still leaves room for creativity.

It’s ok to take a break

keep-calm-and-take-a-break

Digi burnout? If it hasn’t happened to you yet, it will. Even though I’m completely passionate about digital scrapbooking (and memory keeping in general), I still get burned out at times. I hit one of those creative walls on Friday and felt like I couldn’t stand to do anything scrapbook related at all this weekend. I’ve had that feeling before and it has lasted anywhere from a few hours, to more than a year. The year-long hiatus happened in 2004 before I discovered digital. Fortunately, since going digi in 2005, I’ve never suffered from burnout for more than a few weeks. I just can’t stay away and I always find something that gets me inspired to get going again.

Is this the same as losing your mojo? It’s hard to say because it’s different for everyone. For me, burning out is more serious than feeling like I’m uninspired or out of ideas. Burnout can mean that you doubt you want to (or are able to) create anymore at all. It happens to all sorts of creative people and it’s not fun!

If you are feeling burned out on something that used to give you creative joy, I have a few tips to share:

Check for underlying physical issues

Source: oprah.com via Katie on Pinterest

Are you tired? Overwhelmed with other responsibilities? Short of time? In poor health? Any time your body and mind are not running with a full tank of fuel to keep them going, you run the risk of burnout. You will feel more like yourself if you are taking care of your physical and mental needs. This will mean you are more likely to enjoy creative endeavors.

Are you bored?

Have you fallen into a creative rut and stopped trying new things? Even the most talented artists evolve throughout their careers. It’s ok to explore new avenues and try new things. If you’ve always used a template, try scrapping without one for a change. Take an online class. Listen to a podcast. Browse through some galleries for inspiration.

Feeling like a perfectionist?

Source: scrapbook.com via Katie on Pinterest

Are you hung up on perfection issues? If you can’t let yourself make mistakes, you will never be able to create anything. This can be a paralyzing trap that will keep you stuck for a long time!

Turn off the computer

Source: dailygood.org via Katie on Pinterest

This might seem like strange advice from a daily website that is all about helping you find resources, ideas, and motivation to capture your memories, but even we recognize that sometimes you just need to unplug for awhile. Step away from the computer for awhile and do something completely different. This seems to be the approach that helps me the most when I’m suffering from burnout. I minimized my computer time over the past two days and focused on cleaning, gardening, and going out with my family. It has helped tremendously and I feel like I’ll be ready to get back to my beloved digi scrapping very soon. Don’t underestimate the power or taking a break!

Using a themed kit for a non-themed layout

stretch the supplies in theme kits at The Daily Digi

Chelle’s Creations The Mane Event. Georgia font.

Do you have themed kits on your hard drive that seem like they can only be used once? I never shy away from buying a kit with a strong theme, because I know I can use it to emphasize the memories around the theme of the kit AND still use it for plenty of other layouts and projects as well. I asked some great digi scrappers from The Daily Digi team to help me illustrate how you can scrap any layout with any kit.

For this challenge, I had each digi scrapper use The Mane Event kit by Chelle’s Creations. It’s a darling kit and it has a very specific theme centered around hair and all that we do to keep it manageable.

Chelle Mane Event kit

I was thrilled to see what they came up with, not a hair-related page in sight! Ronnie used the solid papers in the kit as backgrounds for her daughter’s stunning dance photos. The addition of some flowers, ribbons, and buttons gave her just the right accents for a pretty page like this.

A skiing layout with a hair kit? You bet! I love how Amelia picked out the more bold and masculine prints from the kit and used that fantastic alpha for her title.

Layout by Amelia. Additional credits -Template: Biograffiti Four Play No. 1. Font: CK_Ali’s Hand

Repeating a few embellishments over and over will help you create a beautiful cluster of accents. Jacki did such a nice job making this page feminine and cheery.

a few notes from Jacki – I was making a similar LO to my older daughter’s, featured here: I created confetti using a tutorial by Nannette Dalton.  I recolored the red button and brad and used the clone tool to ‘erase’ the scissors on the background paper. The top paper and large photo have 78% opacity.

Lauren turned a hair-themed kit into a fishing-themed layout by just adding a little fish shape and the appropriate title! The pocket scrapping style of this page is a fun way to use pieces of the patterned paper as great accents!
