Dream Big Designs: Consuming Nature

Cheri of Dream Big Designs is another designer I have been able to meet in real life. She is super cute and so very sweet! I love Cheri’s well-themed kits and how the theme is carried throughout from beginning to end. She can (and does) design just about anything from classy chic to the rough and tumble boy. If you are a scrapper of boys, you will love taking a look around her store! Dream Big Design’s contribution to The Digi Files is very timely this month as many of us will be heading out to farms and orchards during harvest season.  Let’s take a closer look at “County Bounty” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month!

Hi! (Waves excitedly) I am Cheri Robinson of Dream Big Designs. I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. But left when I was pretty young and was really raised in Portland, Oregon. I love the green and salty smell of the Ocean. I moved to Utah after I married my college sweetheart.
I have been married for 11 years and am a stay at home mother of 3 kids (7,5, and 2). I also am a professional cake decorator (of 10 years) and create cakes out of my home.
I love to read Young Adult Fiction, run on trails, ride horses, water ski, 4 wheel, and play with my family.

I love white space on a layout. This one doesn’t have a lot, but enough that it brings your eye to the focus of the page. I adore boy colors and even though this layout is about a girl, I love the tough feel of it. We as a family are outside A LOT, and this was one of our fun trips to the Sand Dunes with our 4 Wheelers.

After I had my second child in 2007 I needed a creative way to journal and scrap the photos of my two kids. I was never very interested in paper scrapping. It always seemed to messy, expensive, and time consuming for me. So, I took a free digital scrapbooking class at my church and fell in love.

About 6 months after I started making layouts, I began to design. I never looked back, I LOVED it!

I really enjoy learning new things about a program and trying new skills. I see something I want to do, and I learn and experiment until I can figure it out.

My family is my biggest inspiration. Then I would say, the outdoors. I LOVE to be outdoors breathing, ingesting, and consuming nature. I have always had a tie to nature and animals. I grew up with horses and I have never been able to get that out of my blood.
The second thing that inspires me to create is colors. I can look at a pallet and almost immediately have an idea or feeling about what those colors represent to me. A lot of times I will be laying in bed and a pallet will jump into my mind. I will get a theme from that, then the ideas just flow into my mind. I always keep a pen and paper by me to write ideas down. I have so many ideas and pallets I want to create, I wish most days I didn’t have to sleep, or clean, or shower. Haha! I just LOVE to create all the time.

Computer: I have a Dell XPS 8300. WIth 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. OS is Microsoft Windows 7. I have a 24 inch monitor. It also has the new Intel core i7. My hubby calls it an alien. It is uber fast, and I love it.
Program: I have CS5 and Adobe Illustrator that I use to design with. I also have PSE 7, that I used to use to scrap with. But I have moved onto using CS5 to create layouts and projects.
Camera: Canon t2i. My hubby is much better with cameras than me, so I normally have our Canon point and shoot. But we are for sure a Canon family.
Anything Else: I also use my HP scanner A LOT for textures, extractions and brushes.

A layout tip I LOVE is intertwining ribbons and elements. You duplicate the ribbon layer, put it on top of the element, then erase part of the ribbon. It makes it look like they are tied together.

A design tip is to try using the pen tool for extracting. You can use anchors to bend and shape the path to create perfect rounds or sharp edges. LOVE the pen tool in CS5.

I just love the energetic colors, and fun elements in this kit. My hubby is really into Triathlons and after I attended my first one, I knew I just had to create a kit for it.
I wanted to put all the three events together, and not have them in separate kits. That is why this kit is so versatile. You can use it for running, swimming, or biking races. The colors are also one of my favorites. They are energetic and bright, but not overwhelming. I LOVE boyish types of colors and most of my kits reflect that. They all work for girls too, but I like to focus on the masculine shades of colors and pallets.

Each of my newest releases seems to outsell the last, so it is hard to say which is the most popular. But one that has been a consistent seller is my Monster Truck Madness kit.
I wanted to create a real “on Fire” boys truck kit. So I choose bright fire red and orange, but also wanted to add some fun boyish colors. The chrome elements and flames add a perfect touch to the Monster Trucks and racing elements. Stars, flairs and even gears are included. It is the ultimate Bad Boy kit.
