Busy Bee Designs: Very International Family

DesignerLogo

If you like clusters on your layouts, you will love BusyBee’s templates! She has a great sense of design, so if achieving great looking clusters is not a strong suit, these templates will be a great jumping off point. One of the things that I love about BusyBee Designs is that there aren’t an overwhelming amount of elements on them.  The ones that are there, are placed perfectly to create balance and flow on the layout! Let’s take a closer look at “Summer Flavors: Raspberry Lemonade” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

celebrate

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month!

layout
The photo is the main inspiration for this layout. I just love this picture of my daughter and me. I rarely get any pictures of myself because I am usually behind the camera and this one is just so precious with me holding her. I also loved the kit I used here. It’s called Naturally Warm by Kitty and it’s one of my favorites.

DesignerLO

started
I first started paper scrapping. I really loved it but after having children I realized that it was quite the messy hobby. I discovered digital scrapping right before my third daughter was born and was amazed to see what a great creative outlet digital scrapping was for me. I became a part of different creative teams and got exposed to various designing styles. I became a part of the MScraps creative team right when it opened as a store. During one of our blog trains I made a template as a freebie and was asked by the owner of the store, Joyce Paul if I would be interested in becoming a template designer. I decided to try it out and have really enjoyed designing templates for the past two years. It’s such a rewarding feeling to see the pages around the galleries using my templates.

inspired
Since I am a template designer I usually create my templates using my own pages. And to create the pages I am inspired by a photo or a story which becomes a scrap page. Very rarely I create templates out of scratch, not using a previous page. These are harder for me but the inspiration for them comes from the hope that they might be someone’s creative catalyst. I really enjoy seeing what people do with my templates and I am never offended if they have been completely changed at the end. Seeing what people can do with a template that I have created inspires me.

tools
Computer: I have a Sony VAIO laptop which runs on Windows 7 on 4GB of RAM.
Program: Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Illustrator CS5.
Camera: Canon Rebel
Anything Else: I use a Wacom Bamboo tablet every once in a while.

tipstricks
As a scrapper and a template designer I love to cluster. These kind of pages remind me of my paper scrap pages and with the right shadowing they can look very realistic. So to create a good cluster I often times put a few elements together in a bunch and merge the layers. Then I can duplicate the layers a few times, arrange the new clusters around each other and now I have an even bigger cluster that I merge together. You can place it anywhere on your page, I usually put it around the photos. I really like to stick clusters or big bulky elements under the photos too because it creates dimension and helps with the realistic effect.

favorite
My favorite product is my Fall Flavors templates. Fall is probably my favorite season. I love the smell of pumpkins and leaves, the crisp air and apple cider. The colors in these templates were inspired by the rich colors of fall.

ColorCode

popular
Honey Pots, Part 1 is my most popular product. This template pack was based on my own scrap pages so I guess it was inspired by the stories and photos behind these pages. I started to create the Honey Pots series of templates not too long after I became a designer and I wanted them to represent in some way my designer name. A friend of mine actually came up with the name and I really loved it.

Have you checked out TED?

TED

TED.com is such an amazing resource that I’m always surprised at how many people don’t know about it.

If you want to learn more about the ideas behind TED, be sure to check out their about page. This excerpt explains the mission of the site: On TED.com, we make the best talks and performances from TED and partners available to the world, for free. More than 900 TEDTalks are now available, with more added each week. All of the talks are subtitled in English, and many are subtitled in various languages. These videos are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.

There are several TED resources worth mentioning:

Here are some of the TED talks that have made an impact on my own life:

JK Rowling: The fringe benefits of failure

This was filmed at Harvard where she gave the commencement speech in 2008. She talked about her own experiences and the lessons she has learned and gives great advice to the graduating class.

image

Deborah Rhodes: A tool that finds 3x more breast tumors, and why it’s not available to you

This talk was such an eye-opener for me. Dr. Deborah Rhodes developed a new tool for tumor detection that’s 3 times as effective as traditional mammograms for women with dense breast tissue. The life-saving implications are stunning. So why haven’t we heard of it? Rhodes shares the story behind the tool’s creation, and the web of politics and economics that keep it from mainstream use.

image

Barry Schwartz: The paradox of choice

image

This is an older TED talk, but even more applicable today. Psychologist Barry Schwartz takes aim at a central tenet of western societies: freedom of choice. In Schwartz’s estimation, choice has made us not freer but more paralyzed, not happier but more dissatisfied. – Just a warning that this talk has a few mild adult words and a comic with a suggestive drawing.

Elizabeth Gilbert: Your elusive creative genius

image

Elizabeth Gilbert muses on the impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses — and shares the radical idea that, instead of the rare person “being” a genius, all of us “have” a genius. It’s a funny, personal and surprisingly moving talk.

Jimmy Wales on the birth of Wikipedia

image

I’m a big fan of Wikipedia so I really enjoyed watching this TED talk given by the founder Jimmy Wales. With a vision for a free online encyclopedia, Wales assembled legions of volunteer contributors, gave them tools for collaborating, and created the self-organizing, self-correcting, ever-expanding, multilingual encyclopedia of the future.

Do you have any favorite TED talks? I’d love to know!

A Tour of Our New App

image

I’m really excited about our new iPhone app! If you have our old app, you will need to download this one as a new app, not an update. This has to do with the way the first app was built and because I wanted The Daily Digi listed as the developer on this one.

I’ve received lots of emails and comments from people saying they love the new app! We would love to see some reviews and ratings being added to the store if you are in that club! Smile Winking smile

Let’s take a tour of what this app can do. There is probably a lot more to it than most people imagined before downloading.

Here’s the first view you will see when you open the app:

image

Scroll down a little and you will reveal the Flickr group feed:

image

Open one of the Posts from The Daily Digi and this is what it will look like:

image

Open a Digi Show post and this is what you will see:

image

Click on the action button in the bottom right corner and get these options:

image

When you click on Share you will have the option to tweet, post to Facebook, or email. Since Twitter and the iPhone are integrated, if you have logged into Twitter once, you will not need to login before sharing. Facebook will require a login.

You can add any of The Daily Digi posts or layouts from the Flickr group to your My Inspiration by touching the “Add to My Inspiration” button:

image

If you go back to the main screen in the app and touch “my inspiration,” you can see everything you’ve added there and access them easily.

image

Touch the “Challenge Me” tab and get ready to challenge your scrapping self! If you don’t have any active challenges, the app will show you a note to add a new challenge by clicking the +. After tapping the +, you will see this screen:

image

Touch “Start New Challenge” and watch the tiles flip over to reveal your challenge:

image

image

After accepting the challenge, it will be added to your active challenges list:

image

Once your challenge is done, and you mark it completed, you are instructed to upload the image to our Flickr group. After the layout has been added (and approved), then you can attach the layout to the challenge:

image

image

When you select the layout, the image will be pulled up, and you can confirm it (note the layout below is not mine, just chose one as an example):

image

This is what you will see when your challenges are completed:

image

When you tap to see your completed layouts, you will see them all lined up nicely, almost like a badge:

image

Tap on one of those little badges and this is what you will see:

image

The layout will be displayed with whatever challenge you attach it to, as you can see, this layout doesn’t really follow this challenge…lol…again, just an example.

The biggest question from you lately has been, “Are you going to do an Android version and when?” Yes! We are working on an Android version. Finding Android developers has been more difficult than I ever thought it would be. I have not forgotten our Android users, I promise!

This app works on iPhones and iPod Touches, so go download and start challenging yourself!

Flipping over Friday!

flip copy

First up, you’re going to flip over our brand new iPhone app that you can download from the app store! Steph will do a post tomorrow on everything it does, but a few of the cool features are:

image

1) Access The Daily Digi posts, The Digi Show posts and play the show in-app.

2) Access our Flickr stream with digital scrapbook inspiration at your fingertips.

3) Share any of these on Twitter, Facebook, and email.

4) Save layouts and posts to your inspiration tab in the app for easy access later.

5) Our new CHALLENGE ME that will generate a scrapbooking challenge for you and tell you how many photos to use, how papers, what colors of paper and embellishments, and how many patterned papers to use. Upload your layout to our Flickr group, then attach the layout to the challenge in the app.

Tell Us What You Think

We want to hear from YOU! We have a new survey for our readers, members, and newsletter subscribers! It’s super short, will only take a couple of minutes (or less) and when you’re done, you’ll get a link to download this template:

folder_thumb

Daily Emails?

There have been several requests for the ability to sign up to receive the posts via daily emails. Steph has added this feature to our newsletter, if you would like to start receiving these daily post updates in your inbox, just click on update your profile here or it’s always at the bottom of the newsletter as well. If you change your mind later and don’t want the daily updates, click update your profile again to uncheck that box. Smile

Playbooks in new formats

Now the Playbook in PDF and iBooks (part of The Digi Game annual and monthly membership) will be joined by Kindle and Nook Color!

Speaking of the Playbook in new formats, we have had many requests to make past Playbooks available for purchase. Later this month, you will be able to purchase Playbook Packs Jan-June 2011 (234 pages) and June-December 2011 (291 pages) on the site. The packs will be priced at $45 for each six month pack. Members will receive a coupon code valid for the first week after release in the members area (a newsletter will go out as well).

These packs will be available in PDF, iBooks, Nook Color, and Kindle. We have clickable Table of Contents, bookmarks by month, designer, and topic. We have also verified the links to tutorials, etc. are accurate and functional.

Tell All Show

Our 50th episode of The Digi Show is up and it is a fun show! Katie, Peppermint, and I answered YOUR questions and didn’t hold back! Some of the information included:

  • Our secret indulgences (this might shock you)
  • Why Steph doesn’t share her last name
  • Steph’s most traumatic experience in the digital community in the past 9 years
  • How Peppermint decides who to collab with.
  • Which pick by someone else on the show has changed our lives.
  • How Steph decides what designers will contribute to The Digi Files and when.

This is a little look at a mini kit that will be going up for members only in just a few days. It’s a bonus for subscribers of The Digi Game level (monthly or annual). It’s been a lot of fun and I love the colors!

Liz of Paislee Press is one of the few designers that I have been able to meet in real life, when we both attended CHA in 2011. Liz is a super sweet person and a brilliant designer! I LOVE her clean, minimal designs that always include gorgeous word art!  The lined doodles that she includes in her collections are simply adorable. Her designs are easy to scrap with over and over! As you can tell, I am thrilled to be welcoming back Paislee Press to The Digi files this month! Let’s take a closer look at “Diptych” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

I created this photobook to document a weekend getaway with my girlfriends. I love it because this project came together so quickly and easily. I think partly because I didn’t stress over the “quality” of the photos and instead just focused on the memories/moments that we captured with our camera phones.

It was also neat to work with and incorporate other people’s photos into this album – to see the same moment documented via 4 cameras – sometimes our photos looked almost identical and other times they looked wildly different!

DesignerLO

started
I started scrapbooking (paper first) in 2001. I didn’t venture into digital until 2005, and initially, I only intended to use photoshop to create mock up pages for our wedding album. Never in a million years did I think I would end up ditching paper for pixels and even more bizarre – that I would end up designing/creating for a living!

inspired
I’m inspired by colors, by photography, interior design and fashion, people watching, conversations, funny things my daughters say.

Photography is a big source of inspiration. For me it’s the most important design element on the page. Typography follows as a close second. And of course, white space, a place for the eye to rest is something I always build in when I’m creating a page. Those are the design rules that I follow.

tools
Computer: Mac OS X Lio, 3.4 GHz Processor, 8 GB Ram, 27″ Monitor
Program: Desgining: Photoshop, Ilustrator, InDesign (all CS5)
Photo processing: Lightroom, photoshop
Camera: Nikon D300
Anything Else: tablet: bamboo
tipstricks
Photoshop tip: Hold down the SHIFT key when you’re dragging something onto your working file – it automatically centers the object!

favorite
I can only pick one? 🙂 There are so many kits that I love but if I have to single out just one, it would have to be a photobook/template kit. Hello, Love is one of my favorites because it focuses on the design elements that I love most – strong photo-centric layouts, lots of white space and discreet type treatment.

ColorCode

popular
I can’t say for certain why this kit in particular stands out in my shop but I’d venture to guess that pretty much any kit with a photobooth or camera theme tends to do well. Maybe also because the colors and the elements are gender neutral so it appeals to a broader range of scrapbookers? I’m thrilled that photobooth has been so well received!

Did you know that ALL of the products included in The Digi Files are brand new, never before released in digi land?!? Our annual members were able to start downloading their goodies once the calendar turned to August 1st ET. Our monthly members will start downloading as soon as their payments process through PayPal. Why don’t we show what’s in the files at the beginning of the month? There are lots of reasons, but the biggest is that our members LOVE the surprise! They have come to trust our quality and they love downloading and unzipping before knowing what’s in there.

As a member of The Digi Game, you get:

  • Try new-to-you designers with a very low risk.
  • Stock up on high quality products at an extremely low price.
  • Get layout ideas for the products included (in the Playbook).
  • Learn the latest digital scrapbooking techniques in the Playbook.
  • Products are automatically added to your account each month, no checkout or PayPal login required

Here’s what some of our members said yesterday in the comments:

For me each month is like my birthday! I just love the Digi Files and the diverse products to try. I have been scrapping for over 5 years with Photoshop and yet still always find something new to learn. Krista(norton94)

I’m not a digi scrapper but I love, LoVe, LOVE The Digi Show! I subscribed to the digi files to support the Digi Show and feel like it is so worth it! I love to hear the ladies talk techy crafty stuff and wish I could join in the conversation at times! Thank you for your time in preparing this podcast each week! I do love the digi files as well for creating invitations, flyers and other crafty things! Thanks again! LaraR

I just love the variety of the kits we find in each month’s downloads. Amazing talents and so diverse. I don’t know how you continue to find all the “new to me” designers, but this month there were three! Thanks so much for broadening my digi scrapping experience. Valerie

Hello, I am so glad I became a member as I am loving the Digifiles! I do not get to scrap often so I look for great templates to help maximize my time. I really enjoy the templates you provide… the beautiful kits are great as well. :) I have told a few friends who are considering going digi about your site. Thank you for all you do! Have a great day! Cris

Tips for eBook Success

Here are some tips for syncing the different eBook types that the Playbook comes in to different devices.

Syncing Apps for Kindle and Nook

Customers can use Calibre and Miro to sync content to their devices.
But, it’s easy to manually copy files as well.

Kindle

Kindle requires the following files be put into the documents folder:
.opf
.jpg
.mobi
The video goes into the videos folder and will show up in the gallery
app (not the videos app).
.mp4

Transferring Content to Your Kindle Keyboard via USB

To install Kindle version in iOS:

(though the iBooks option will workbetter for iPad)

Hook up your iPhone, download the Kindle app from the App store, add
it to the iPhone with a sync, then select the iPhone in iTunes to
manage it. Select the Apps tab in iTunes for the iPhone. Scroll to the
bottom half of the window (below the Sync Apps section) to the File
Sharing section. Click once on the Kindle app in that list and there
will be a Kindle Documents window on the right where one can drag/drop
.mobi files directly into your library.

NOOK

This should take the Epub straight up.
1. Plug in your USB cable to the nook and then into your USB input on
your computer.
2. The Nook will appear as a device.
3. Find the My Documents folder on your nook
4.Grab, drag and drop the ebook into the My Documents folder AND the video into the Videos folder.
5. Unplug nook from computer
6. On the nook do a Search For New Content. Your new files should show
up in the My Documents folder.
If this does not work, or your Nook will not open the file, you will
have to download Adobe Digital Editions. Do you have Adobe Digital
Edition loaded to your computer? If not download the software here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/#download and activate
it. Open the ebook in DE. Plug your Nook and it should show up in the
software with a prompt to activate your Nook. Now you should be able
to pull the book and drop it in the Nook.

iBooks

After seeing the significant amount of members that own iPads (from our member survey), I am excited to share with our members that the Playbook is now available in iBooks format! It was a last minute decision and everything quickly fell into place. My programmer worked late into the night and this morning so our members can log into the site on their iPads and have the iBook verion of the Playbook open in iBooks:

You will get a message like this, select Open in iBooks:

In the iBooks verion of the Playbook, you can tap each layout to see it larger (full screen), scroll through images, tap links and have them open in Safari, and watch the video tutorial. It’s really slick!
