Britt-ish Designs: Don’t Skimp

DesignerLogo

Brittney of Britt-ish Designs has been around for quite a while, I’m not sure what took me so long to find her! When I did find her though, I thought I had gone to heaven with all of the great, bright, Disney-ish kits she has in her store! Brittney has a great ability to use soft colors as well as bold and bright and create beautiful collections with them! I find myself super inspired by the elements and papers in her kits and can’t wait to get scrapping! I’m over the moon to have Britt-ish Designs joining us in The Digi Files! Let’s take a closer look at “Are We There Yet?” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

Name
Hi! My name is Brittney Leavitt of Britt-ish Designs. I live in Utah with my husband/best friend Josh and our beautiful daughter, Scarlett. I’m a work-at-home mom & I couldn’t be more blessed to be able to stay home with my baby. I love that! I run brittishdesigns.com on my own, and love the freedom & flexibility I get from owning my own site and my own business.

I’m known for my obsession love of Disneyland & all things Disney. We head out to Disneyland at least twice a year. Scarlett is only 1 but she’ll be taking her third trip to Disneyland this fall!

One of my favorite pages ever. Definitely my favorite recent page. This is just a very special moment for us. A dream come true. That’s what scrapping is all about. To me, it’s about capturing those magical moments, whether they are monumental or everyday so that you can relive them every time you look at your page.

Britt Tip: Don’t skimp! Whether its spending extra time, going the extra mile, adding that special embellishment you had to hunt down on your EHD for 20 minutes, make every page count. I think scrapping is art and I always try to make each page a piece of art. Tweaking, stepping back to look at the overall piece, take your time. Rushing to get pages done will not make you happy in the end. And when you look back on your work, you’re going to want to be proud of what you created.

started
I have scrapbooked since I can remember. My mom was super nice to give me duplicates of my childhood photos and let me cut and paste and create what used to be “cute” scrapbooks. But I could never keep the paper thing going. I would get spurts, but the cost and work it takes to paper scrap just killed me. I couldn’t stand the mess!!!

I’ve always loved computers, and been fairly good at design. Once I stumbled upon digital scrapbooking back in 2006, there was no looking back. I was immediately obsessed. And it wasn’t long (2 1/2 months to be precise) before I just had to try my hand at design. I’m just a designer at heart and it was calling to me. I started out just designing products that I myself wanted and needed to use and it all took off from there.

inspired
My own photos! I’ve admitted this before, but most times I create kits that I need/want to scrap my own pictures!! Most often Disney trips.

But I find inspiration everywhere. From my daughters clothes, to a commercial on TV, to a gorgeous handmade something-or-other on etsy, inspiration is everywhere!

tools
Computer: I’m an Apple girl. My husband works as an Apple technician, so we’re all Mac around here. He’s also my built-in tech and takes care of my computer needs and problems. Aren’t I lucky?! I have 2 20″ monitors. I’m ADDICTED to two monitors. I went to two when I first started scrapping and I can never go back! I use a tower with a ridiculous amount of RAM and memory. So much RAM and memory I’m a little embarrassed to admit it. Just one of the perks of having a computer tech as a hubby!

We have a very good back up system in place as well. I back up to internal hard drives constantly and once in a while my husband backs everything up on an extra hard drive and then stores it at another location off our property to ensure its safety, so if anything ever happened to our house or to our computer, we’d still have that back up. I can’t tell you how many people come to me in tears asking for me to reset their downloads because they lost everything. BACK UP! BACK UP! BACK UP!! My husband has a saying at work, all hard drives WILL fail. Its just a matter of when.

Program: I still use Photoshop CS3. Haven’t upgraded yet. I’m happy with it, so I haven’t felt the draw to upgrade and learn something new! HAHA! I also use Illustrator, but not all that often. Mostly its just Photoshop.

Camera: I have a Canon Rebel xsi. But we’re looking to upgrade to a newer model soon!

Anything Else: I have a Bamboo tablet, but I hardly ever use it. I do like it though – just don’t pull it out very often.
tipstricks
Keyboard shortcuts are the key to scrapping efficiently. When I find a useful new keyboard shortcut I’m practically giddy!! Googling has helped me a lot to learn the shortcuts. Plus, did you know you can make your own custom keyboard shortcuts? I use Brightness & Contrast a TON (I brighten almost every photo I scrap) so I made my own shortcut for it. Sometimes I forget its not everyone’s shortcut, so when I explain my method to people and say ” . . . then I push command+shift+a to brighten it up” I have to quickly correct myself!!

Try out creating your own custom shortcuts for those tasks you do ALL the time but that don’t come with a default shortcut. If you use Photoshop like I do, just go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts.

This is such a hard question. I swear it changes monthly. Right now I have to say I really love “A Time To Remember”.

“A Time to Remember” is my castle, springtime, princessy kit and I LOVE how it turned out. It’s inspired by my daughter’s first time seeing the beautiful pink Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland. It was a special cherished memory and I just had to make an entire kit for it to scrap it just perfectly. And I’m beyond happy to see others use it for their own magical memories too!

I hadn’t done a “general” Disney kit for a while when I first released “Just Plain Fun”, so I think people were happy to see something like this from me again. It’s just the perfect Disney kit! Fun, bright, happy and SUPER versatile. I use it myself quite a lot, so it must be an ok kit! It has dreamy light blues, and vellum clouds so you can create a dreamy magical feel. And it also has those bold reds, yellows, and blacks that you need for a punchy Mickey page. But it’s also just perfect KID colors in general, so you can scrap just about anything with it – not just Disney!! I have to say I love that I see so many people using this kit. It’s really the best thing to see people use my stuff.
