Erica Zane: A Fan Of…

I love Erica Zane’s Designs! I loe her vintage/retro feel of her kits, her happy themes, and her great sense of color (also happy)! After reading her interview, I’m sure you will agree with me that her positive attitude is pretty contagious! I am thrilled to have Erica joining us this month in The Dig Files!!  Let’s take a closer look at “Never Forget” and “Dated With Love” that are included in The Digi Files this month:

My name is Erica Zane and I live in Northern Virginia (just a bit outside Washington DC) with my wonderful hubby and our 4 crazy cute kids. We have 2 boys and 2 girls ranging from 2-10 years old. We also have a lizard and some fish. 😉

I am of course addicted to designing & digital scrapbooking…I also love taking photos of my kids (when I remember to step away from my computer!), exploring nature trails with my family, reading (again, when I remember to step away from my computer). My favorite place to be is the beach and my favorite people to hang out with are my family. I’m pretty hermit-ish and enjoy being at home, I don’t mind the occasional trip to Target though!

You might also notice I am a fan of run-on sentences, the exclamation point, smilies, LOLs, and these 3 dots… 🙂

First of all, I love this photo of my daughter…it takes a lot to get a normal smile from her when the camera is out! When I saw the kit I immediately knew it was just what I needed, the colors are so her! The pieced together, random mix of goodies is also so her which is why this is one of my favorite LOs at the moment.

I have been paper scrapping on and off since high school. I’ve always loved taking photos and creating. One day I was looking online for scrapbooking supplies and saw a digital tab. I was intrigued..and honestly, I think it was pretty much love at first sight, and I’ve been hooked ever since. {I think it was 2006.} I started designing less than a year after that and the love affair continues.

Colors! I do not look at anything the same since I started designing! I can see the random-est thing & be like oh, that would be an awesome kit! Luckily my hubby is used to such things by now and only laughs occasionally. 😉

Computer: I use a desktop PC with Windows 7, 4GIG RAM and a 21″ monitor.
Program: Photoshop & Illustrator CS5
Camera: Canon Rebel XT
Anything Else: Every now and then I use a Staples brand tablet someone gave to me like 10 years ago, lol! I usually just use my mouse! 🙂

I know some people are intimidated by extractions, but it doesn’t have to be hard and it can make for a fun LO! Everyone has their own way of extracting…I like to use the lasso tool. The best way to do it is to zoom in & work in small chunks. If you try to extract the whole photo at once it gets too intense, especially if one of your kids comes along & bumps your arm when you were almost done and you lose it all…just sayin’. 😉

I use the regular lasso tool and hold the alt button as I go…that way I can go freehand if I hold down the mouse button or I can click from point to point for bigger areas. After I extract my subject I ctrl-click the layer to select my extraction then I inverse it and go to select-modify-smooth and type in 10-20 pixels (depending on the size of my image) click ok then hit the delete key. This cleans up some of the jagged points you might have created while extracting.

With You was inspired by an afternoon blowing bubbles with my girls. Later that day (during naptime!) when I was on my computer I was thinking of the fun we’d had and came across a swatch I’d saved a few days earlier and it all just clicked! I think it’s my favorite because it’s got those memories associated with it plus the added bonus that I just LOVE the colors (especially the GREEN)!

Goodness, it’s been so long – I don’t remember why I chose those particular colors – but my daughter has quite a few outfits in those colors so I was probably influenced by them! I just love how pretty and full of flowers and birds this one is. It reminds me of spring and summer and beautiful days in nature (without the scorching summer sun or spring downpours or allergies or nasty bugs – just the fun, pretty parts of those seasons!).
