Digital Scrapbook Supply Shopping with Friends

Skype Shopping

Right before Digital Scrapbook Day, Katie, Peppermint, Renne Looney, and I recorded a Digi Show all about this most loved holiday in digital scrapbooking. It was that show that gave me the idea that Katie and I should shop together over Skype. Katie and I live almost 1,000 miles apart, so getting together isn’t an option. But, we both have a passion for digital scrapbooking and especially digital scrapbook shopping. I will admit that Katie can out shop me almost any day, but it was so fun to do some of it together.

Katie and I set up a time that we could both be on our computers on the Saturday. I was pretty busy that day and only had a couple of hours that I could shop. We connected via Skype and shared our screens. We went to the same stores and started browsing. Each time we found something we had to have, we showed it to each other via the screen sharing in Skype. We did a lot of enabling this way Winking smile

It was so fun to share this day and our shopping with each other. I later took all of the previews from all of the goodies I bought and a screenshot of Katie and I Skyping and created this layout, supplies are by Lisa Sisneros.

Do you have a digi friend that you could go shopping with today (on {inter}National Scrapbook Day)? Have you done something like this before? I would love to hear about it in the comments!

Jennifer Barrette: Addicted to Matching

I LOVE Jenn Barrette’s products! I have been a fan of hers from the moment I unzipped my first purchase from her store. I love her retro, vintage, shabby style and how easy it is to scrap with her fun, unique papers and elements! Let’s take a closer look at “Love You More Than Ice Cream” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

This is ONE of SEVEN collections you get when you become a member of The Digi Game this month. You also get an interactive Playbook (in PDF and iBooks formats) that has lots of ideas for using the supplies including techniques, tips, and tricks! All of that, including access to exclusive collaborations every four months you are a member, for only $7.50 total per month!

Hi, I am Jenn Barrette and am originally from Windsor, Ontario Canada, but moved to my husband’s hometown, Kenora, Ontario, in 2004. Kenora is a very outdoorsy lakeside town. The population triples in the summer because we are in cottage country…and I hate the outdoors. LOL But, I love my husband Dave, so I deal with living in town without a real mall. We have been together since 2003 and have 2 girls. Ava is 5 years old and goes to kindergarten 3 days a week, and Lilly is 3 and goes to preschool 2 days a week. Designing is definitely my dream job, I get to work in my PJs, spend extra time with my kiddos, and have the joy of seeing my art used to scrapbook my customers memories. In my so called “spare time,” I am often found lost in the web…pretending to work, reading novels better suited to 15 year olds, baking up delicious cupcakes, and listening to bad pop music from the 90s – 2000s, or day tripping with my amazing family.

This is probably one of my favorite pages I have created. I used a template to start my page (template is by Emily Merritt) but added a few of my own touches to it. I used my own kit (Happy Camper) and the photos are from just a simple evening hanging out in our own backyard around an outdoor fire pit.

You may notice that I used a few of my “go to” elements. Every kit I create will usually have a scattered element of some sort (beads, confetti, etc), flowers, buttons, and ribbon. These are my favorite goodies to scrapbook with!

In 2006, I was expecting my first child and knew I wanted to create a scrapbook to document her life. My mother gave me a bunch of her paper scrapbook supplies, and bought me a few “new baby” goodies as well. Unfortunately I never used them! I had bought a scrapbook magazine that had a disk included with it. On that disk was some very simple digital scrapbooking software…and within days I was completely hooked!
I am addicted to matching my kids outfits to my scrapbook pages, so I soon found myself searching for the perfect kit to match my daughter’s little outfits. When I couldn’t find anything, I started playing around in Photoshop trying to create my own. Soon I was spending any spare moment I had at the computer trying to learn Photoshop on my own, and designing my own kits to use on my pages.

COLOR. I love searching through Pinterest, decorating blogs, and children’s clothing sites for the perfect color combinations for my kits. Sometimes I start with a theme I have in mind and then search out a color scheme to work with, but more often than not it is a certain group of colors that speak to me and lead me to an idea for a kit.

Computer: I use a Windows 7 PC with…wait for it…..12 GB of RAM. I also have a wide screen monitor so I can use the Windows split screen function to surf the web or watch a movie as I design. I am such a multitasker and have trouble “just designing”. I love having a little distraction or two going on around me as I work.
Program: I currently use Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 for my designing. I also have an older copy of Lightroom 1.4 that I use for my photo editing.
Camera: I have a Canon Rebel XS camera, and my favorite lens is my 35mm.
Anything Else: I also use a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch tablet for doodly elements and to help with extractions.

Take your camera everywhere. I know it can be a pain to lug around a DSLR camera (my camera bag doubles as my purse most of the time!) so at the very least use the camera function on your phones. Time really does fly, and scrapbooking those little moments helps me to kinda hang out to those memories longer. As great as it is to hone your photography skills, sometimes that out of focus, too dark, etc photo is all you need to scrap the perfect page.

My favorite season is Autumn, and I always take my kids out for an “Autumn Photoshoot”. This year my daughter Ava wore an outfit that had both purple and pink in it, but I couldn’t find a Autumn themed kit with those colors. I do love theme kits, but usually like to put a different little spin on them, and thought something girly and woodsy would be perfect Autumn.

I think what made this kit so popular is it’s versatility. “Little Miss Personality” has a color scheme that can go with just about any color photos. The bright colors and loose theme were inspired by my youngest daughter Lilly. She is so fun of personality and is such a joy to be around.

Favorite Digi Store Features

the Tattered Pear Downtown Christmas. Ostrich Sans Round font.

I like to think of myself as a pro-level digital scrapbook shopper. I certainly have put in the time and effort to achieve such a rank. lol! In my travels around digi land, I’ve found that a few simple features can turn a good store into a great one! Let me show you some of my favorites:

One of the best things about shopping at Scrapbook Graphics is that the site will show you everything that’s been added since your last visit. I always feel like I’m really seeing everything there is at SBG because of this feature and I know I buy more because of it!

I love the consistent theme at Scrap Orchard. It’s fun that they have done such clever things with the Orchard idea like “fresh fruit”, “perfect pears”, “fruit salad”, “free-bees”, and more!

After 5 Designs is great for doing frequent free with purchase collaboration kits. When I see that all I need to do is add a few more dollars worth of products to my cart to get a jam-packed collab kit, it’s a no brainer for me!

At The Digi Chick, I really appreciate that I can see the full listing of categories and designers in the sidebar without having to open up a drop down menu. I often shop by designer so this makes it a lot easier for me!

I appreciate the “bargain boutique” section at Catscrap when I’m looking for a good deal. I’ve had some great finds there!

It sure is nice to be able to sample a designer’s work before committing to buy. I like that the Sweet Shoppe has freebie samplers from all of their designers so you can try before you buy!

Zig Zag Scraps displays the bestsellers list for each category of products. I love that when I click on “word art” I can see what the most popular designs are. I always find something new this way!

I really appreciate that Oscraps has expandable menus for some of their designers that allows me not only to shop by designer, but by specific product type from that designer. Being able to shop Anna Aspnes’ Art Play Palettes or Kitty Designs templates really makes it so much easier to find what I’m looking for!

I find it so helpful that I can shop by type of element at MScraps. There are many times that I’m in need of something very specific such as stitches, flowers, or staples and I appreciate the categorization of these items when I’m shopping!

The Lily Pad is known for pioneering the “Build Your Own Collab” approach to shopping and I look forward to a new offering of every month. I’m so happy that I can just buy the related collections that appeal to me and I don’t have to buy it all to get those items that I just can’t live without!

These stores provide high quality and appealing designs on a consistent basis – not an easy thing to do! Many stores also offer extra features like galleries, forums, challenges, social media interactivity, newsletters, and more. Take a minute to look around some of your favorite digi stores and get to know more about their features. Let them know when they are doing something that makes shopping easier and more fun for you – I know they will appreciate the feedback. Smile We are very lucky to have so many great places to shop in digi land!
