Play it Again with Sisterly Love

I (Katie) am so excited to bring you another round of “Play it Again” and share with you many different ways to digi scrap the same memory. This is a great way to illustrate some of the many possibilities that exist when it comes to digital scrapbooking! Here at The Daily Digi we really want to emphasize that there is not a “right way” or a “wrong way” to put together a layout. It’s more about capturing the memory, finding your own style(s), and PLAYING! Yes, it’s ok to play and have fun!

This time, I asked a few of the best scrappers in the digi community to scrap a memory from Daily Digi team member Kimberly. The only rule they had to follow was to include her journaling and photo. Everything else (including the title) was up to them!

This summer, like every summer, I spent some time in Idaho. It’s hands down one of my favorite places in the world. It’s a place I can relax. It’s a place I feel safe. And it’s a place my children find great joy, which in turn brings me great joy.

?? This summer our trip to Idaho coincided with visits from my sister Amy, as well as my brother Brad and all their families. With eight cousins running around, it was bliss for the children; and heart-warming for us big kids watching our children form the most precious bonds they’ll ever have.

One morning on the trip we decided to load up all the kids and head to a museum in Idaho Falls. Last year, we all saw the Titanic exhibit there. This year we’d be seeing “Bodies in Motion.” As we hustled to get everyone ready, my sister asked me, “You’re not going to wash your hair, are you?” I smiled, said no and smiled to myself knowing just how well my sister knows me.

I don’t wash my hair every day. Heck, I only wash it every three days. I have crazy dry hair and over washing it just makes it worse.  Not many people know this: in fact, I can think of three who do — my husband, my best friend Jennie and my sister. When I do wash my hair, it’s a chore: it takes forever to wash, dry and straighten (possibly another reason I don’t tackle it every single day).

My sister making such an innocent, random, but knowing comment has stuck with me for months. There is such comfort in knowing there is another soul in this world who really knows me.  She knows some of my deepest (and darkest secrets). She knows what I want for my children if Mike and I were to die at the same time. She knows what type of soda to buy for me at the store.  And she knows I don’t wash my hair every day and that I did on that morning in Idaho would have never made it to the museum before noon.

Even on the days I feel most alone: I’m not. I have a band of siblings who love me, know me and make me feel like I belong. Our little tribe has sustained me through so much bad and so much good. Funny how a comment about my dry, frizzy hair is what lead me to this thought.  Who knew?

Without a doubt, I am blessed.  And for that, I am grateful.

Journaling: October 2011

Photo: Late ‘70s or maybe 1980.

I just love the folded frame that Beth used on this layout! Using 2 parts of the same photo is also a clever way to focus on different parts of the memory. It feels like I’ve stumbled onto a nostalgic moment displayed on a table and I love the feeling of that! The scatters add a nice touch of interest to the script journaling. Beautiful!

Jamie’s clustered title work brings a wonderful focal point to the sweet photo of the two sisters. I love the colors she chose to use, they are just perfect for the picture! This layout has a nice balance to it with another piece of artwork at the bottom of the page. Perfect!

Layout by Jaime Grove. Gallery Link. Credits: Season of Thankfulness Boutique Collaborative Kit from The Digi Chick.

Tracy’s layout has a charming retro feel to it and the playful girl stamp reminds us that this memory is about a bond between sisters that began at an early age. The design features in the corners of the page frame it nicely and keep us reigned in to focus on the story and photo. Adorable layout!

Layout by Tracy Ducar (aka Tracyfish). Gallery Link. Credits: Natural Beauty by Krystal Hartley, Love Me Some Andrea 1 alpha by Darcy Baldwin, DJB Emilie Script font by Darcy Baldwin, all available at Sweet Shoppe Designs. Courier New font.

I like to play along also and I thought it would be fun to use some clean and modern looking supplies with this vintage type of photo. I used a warm photo action from Pioneer Woman to make the picture look more it’s age and then combined it with some fun graphic style designs to add a touch of quirkiness to the page. I love the simple lines and the focus on the story.

I love each and every one of these layouts! Thanks so much to the talented digi scrappers who helped us see all the different ways to PLAY!

Look through each layout again and think about which one you prefer. Think about why that one stands out to you and what you like about it. It’s a great exercise to help you learn about yourself as a scrapper and your own preferred style. It also might help you explore some new styles that you haven’t tried before.  Its perfectly OK to use several different styles and methods in your own scrapbooking – I do it all the time!  When you get ready to work on your next layout, take some time to think about all the ways you could play with that memory and have some fun!

Lauren Reid: Little Things You Might Forget

The wonderfully talented Lauren Reid is a member of the team here at The Daily Digi and I’m giddy to have her joining us in The Digi Files again this month! Laurens hip, edgy, vintage, doodly style is one that I LOVE! I have lots of fun examining her kits to see what unique and fun things are inside. Lauren has a wicked sense of humor and that often comes through in her designs. I love the kit she contributed this month and I’m sure you will too! Let’s take a closer look at “Call Me” that is included in The Digi Files this month:

Here are some layouts created using Lauren Reid’s contribution:

LO1Layout by Heddy. Supplies: Call Me by Lauren Reid; Me Time template by Crystal Livesay and Amy Martin.
LO2Layout by Jacki. Supplies: Call Me by Lauren Reid; Fonts: Rub This.
LO3Layout by Karen. Supplies: Call Me by Lauren Reid; Janet Phillips template.
LO4Layout by Kimberly. Supplies: Call Me by Lauren Reid; Stiching by Eva Kipler; Always There (staple) by Crystal Wilkerson; Font: Hero, CK Ali.
LO5Layout by Aaron. Supplies: Call Me by Lauren Reid; Template by Sara Gleason.

You can see more layouts created with this kit on our “Team Inspiration” page.

Name: Lauren Reid

Hometown: I was born and raised in New Jersey, but have lived in Houston, TX for the past almost 4 years.

Family: Hubby Tom, 10 year old twins Josh & Justin, 6 1/2 year old princess Jessica, & our sweet rescue furbabies, 2 kitties Lucy & Cooper and 2 Great Danes, Hazel & Seymour.

Other random facts: I have my Master’s Degree in Education, I was married in Las Vegas, I have a tattoo on top of my left foot, I am one half of the design team “The Tattered Pear”, and I’m hopelessly addicted to Pinterest.

I love this page because the photo is so VERY representative of my daughter’s personality. I also love that it captures her at this moment in time… all those little things that you might forget if not recorded.

I’ve scrapbooked in some form since I was a kid. I remember cutting out photos and sticking them in albums. I didn’t get into the more traditional form of scrapbooking until after my children were born. I didn’t test out digi until the beginning of 2006. I remember seeing layouts by Liz Tamanaha, Michelle Coleman and Leora Sanford over at and that’s what gave me the itch to try it out!

I started designing back in 2006 shortly after I started scrapbooking digitally. It was a complete fluke! I had created a little paper pack freebie for a store I was CT’ing for and they asked me to join their design team! I was had NO idea what I was doing and in WAY over my head, but I jumped in and here I am! Thankfully my designs have come a long way!

eeeeverything! especially color!

Computer: Dell Studio Laptop (4GB) + 4TB ReadyNAS (which is a “Network Attached Storage”)
Program: PSCS5 & Illustrator CS4
Camera: Canon Rebel XTi
Anything Else: Wacom Bamboo Tablet

My number 1 tip is: Try NOT to get stuck in the idea of “perfection”. If you love the process, then you’re doing it right! Try not to compare yourself to others. We all start somewhere and it’s a continuing evolution. Enjoy it!

I’m addicted to tape… this is the second set of Stick Arounds and I adore these as much as the first if not more. I especially love their off beat placement. The colors were from the October BYOC at TLP.

This template was the first of it’s kind in the market and it sold like hotcakes! Now a few years old, people still get excited over it! It was inspired by a mosaic I saw.

Here are some of my favorite products by Lauren Reid:

Here are some more inspirational layouts using Lauren Reid’s products. All of the layouts are linked to the originals with credits.

Go have a look in Lauren Reid’s store! We will randomly select a winner from the comments to win $10.00 in product from her store! (Comments must be posted before midnight EST to qualify)!

December Memories to Make

Digital Design Essentials Christmas Joy. Ali Edwards Holiday Word Art 2

One of the best things about the month of December is all the opportunities for memory making. My family has established many traditions that make this a time of year that we all look forward to. We open our Lego advent calendars every day and build the yearly addition to our Lego holiday village.

dec early 2009 (19)

Winter Toy Shop 2009

We love to go downtown (Salt Lake City, Utah) to see the lights and decorations.

dec 2009 089

Another tradition we enjoy is attending the Festival of Trees each year. It’s a huge showcase for decorated trees and holiday items that are all auctioned off to raise money for Primary Children’s Hospital. This was my favorite gingerbread house from the Festival this year.

December 2011-0048

One of our very favorite activities is learning about how the holidays are celebrated in other countries and cultures. We pick a few countries to study each year during December so we can have special learning dinners where we eat popular foods from that country. We’ve eaten foods from Greece, Germany, Italy, Denmark, and Mexico, and discussed how the December holidays are celebrated in each location. My kids are already asking about which countries we are going to do this season. I’m thinking we need to “travel” to Eastern Europe and Asia to see how they observe the season.

Here’s what Anne does to make memories in December:

During December we try to find time to read a Christmas book each day (this year we are going with Jostein Gaarder’s The Christmas Mystery, I love that book). We also light candles and make sure to be outside in the snow if the weather isn’t too cold. I love to drink a cup of hot cacao in the evenings and we try to spend some time making a few Christmas decorations as well.Every year we meet at my mom’s house to bake and decorate gingerbread men together with my brother and his family. I love that tradition!

What do you do to make memories in the month of December? Do you need some ideas or prompts to jog your memory? Here are some fun holiday activities:

  • Go out and see the holiday lights
  • Decorate gingerbread houses (you can make small ones out of graham crackers if you want a no-bake version)
  • Bake cookies
  • Go caroling
  • See a local production of a holiday show like A Christmas Carol
  • Attend a religious meeting or presentation
  • Donate to your local food bank or favorite charity
  • Go shopping and look at seasonal window displays
  • Build a snowman (or a sandman)

December is a wonderful month for enjoying holiday activities and celebrations – don’t forget your camera!

December is FUN for Digi Scrappers!

I remember the first December that I was a digital scrapbooker (2005) and I was sort of surprised at how many fun things went on in digiland during the month of December. Six years later, it’s snowballed to become a month filled with sales, freebies, events, and more to help us all countdown through the holiday season. There are many more virtual goodies to enjoy and a lot of ways to find them. It can be a bit overwhelming, especially if it’s your first holiday season in digi, so I’ll share the methods that I use to keep track of it all.

If you have a favorite digi store (or several of them) now is a good time to be sure you are subscribed to their newsletters. Many free gifts, sales, and bonus items are announced through newsletters and they are usually the very best way to find out what’s going on at that site. I subscribe to the Scrap Orchard newsletter so I’m receiving daily news this month about which one of their designers is having a 50% off sale that day.

Many individual designers also send out newsletters so be sure to subscribe to your favorites!

Some stores will post their daily happenings right on the main page of their storefront.  You can also keep track of the newest products added to the site by checking the main page of the store. Catscrap is a site that I make sure to visit each day in December for their annual Advent Calendar event.

Several other digi sites do an advent sale of featuring a different category or designer each day.

I don’t hang out in forums as much as I used to, but I make an extra effort to visit a few favorites during this time of year so I can participate in some of the events and contests. For me, it’s just a fun little treat to enjoy. This year, I was excited to find this Pinterest Cookie Party put together by The Lily Pad. I’ve had fun with this challenge because it made me gather up 5 of my tried-and-true holiday favorites to add to my Pinterest boards. I can’t wait to see what everyone else comes up with!

cookiepartyadweb02 (1)

Forums are also a great place to hear about what other scrappers are finding on the site.

Many stores and designers have blogs where they post about their latest promotions. O Scraps has been promoting their 12 Days O Christmas on their blog so I check it each day to find out what deals are going on.

Twitter and Facebook have given us more ways to share our digi finds with each other. Even if you don’t want to post on twitter or facebook, you can still use them as tools for keeping track of special deals and giveaways. I had almost forgotten about the annual cookie exchange (free templates) at the Sweet Shoppe until I saw this tweet

Of course, the best resource I have for keeping up on digi stuff is The Daily Digi twitter feed. Steph does a great job of tweeting and retweeting all the good things a digi scrapper needs to know about!

We eat, sleep, and breathe all things digi so let us help you out! Our Funtastic Friday posts are always full of the latest news and products and we will have posts all month long that will help you stay in touch with the digital scrapbooking community. We do the hard work of finding resources and ideas so you don’t have to! You might want to even bookmark this post to refer to throughout the month. Here are some December fun things you’ll want to know about:

  • After Five Designs will be having a 12 Days of Christmas sale starting on December 13th and going through Christmas Eve. We will have a different surprise sale every day that can only be revealed by clicking on the date on our special Christmas tree that will be on the front page of our store.
  • The Lily Pad December Deals– a different category of products on sale each day
  • Scrap Orchard Advent – a different designer on sale each day until Christmas

Twelve Days of Christmas:

  • Connie Prince is doing a 12 days  of Christmas (12 Days of Freebies) on her blog from December 12-24.
  • Twelve Days O Christmas on the O Scraps blog
  • Mari Koegelenberg still has her 12 Days of Christmas category up on her blog from last year if you are looking for some great inspiration.

Free Goodies:

As always, we’ll keep you updated if we find more December digi fun to share!
