Having Readers Like You…Awesome! (and a gift)

IMG_8505

I’ve been wanting to create an AWESOME album based on the blog 1000 Awesome Things and “The Book of Awesome” all by Neil Pasricha, for a long time. When Katie mentioned the book as her pick of the week on the Digi Show, I knew I HAD to do it! I decided if I created a deadline for myself and gave the album to our readers on Digital Scrapbook Day, it would actually happen…and it has!

Once I started brainstorming the AWESOME little things in my life that I wanted to document, it was really easy. I actually had to decide to stop creating pages. It came together very quickly and I am happy with the results (my family really enjoyed it too and the kids can’t wait for me to make them one of their own).

I used the Basic Grey Luggage Tag chipboard album to adhere my 4×6 prints to. The chipboard was “undressed” (as Basic Grey calls it), so I painted the edges black with acrylic paint. I just printed my layouts, rounded the corners, and glued them on the tags after the paint had dried. I used a cute ribbon to hold it together (the album did come with a ring, but I like the ribbon. You could also tie ribbons on the ring for a fun look). All digital supplies (except the “My Album of Awesome” gift from us) are listed below each page they appear on.

Here’s a look at my whole album and then a free gift for our AWESOME readers!!

As our gift to you, I’ve created a little collection of the foundational digital goodies I used in my Album of Awesome. It includes:

2) Layered 4×6 PSD pages with the kraft paper and awesome border on them
2) “awesome” borders in png (left and right)
1) “My Album of Awesome” title word art
1) doodled border without words
1) 4×6 kraft paper
1) “awesome” word art alone
1) staple

This album was uploaded for subscribers of The Digi Files and the Digi Game last night and will stay in your new “Bonus Gifts” downloads for the month of November. Watch for other things to be added through the month. Happy Digital Scrapbook Day from us!

After discussing this album with my family, we will often ask each other, “What was AWESOME in your day today?” My kids now tell me things they want me to include in their AWESOME albums. It’s been AWESOME!!

Super-Sized Funtastic Friday!

FuntasticFriday.gif

It was hard to figure out what to title this week’s “Funtastic Friday” post because I’ve simply never seen anything quite so big before! It’s enormous! It’s huge! It’s super-sized! If you are somewhat new to digital scrapbooking, you might not understand why there are so many sales going on all that same time. It’s because it is a newly instituted holiday called “Digital Scrapbooking Day” to be held the first Saturday of every November. We usually celebrate (inter)National Scrapbooking Day with the rest of the scrapbooking community in May, but this holiday is just for us digi scrappers!

The big challenge has always been to figure out how to keep up with all the sales, freebies, and events going on. Well rest assured that we are here to help! We have tons of links for you to help you find what you are looking for!

PaperclippingDigiShowCropped

Before we get to the enabling, I (Katie) just want to call your attention to the new episode of the Paper Clipping Digi Show! Debbie Hodge and I were both guests and we all talked about great gift ideas for the upcoming season. It was a fun show to record and there were SO MANY ideas shared. You won’t want to miss it! Also be sure to be a “liker’ of the Paperclipping Digi Show Facebook Page

If you listen in iTunes (and subscribe), it helps us keep track of the size of our audience (and helps us get sponsors).  Izzy has a video on his site explaining how to do that OR you can see our tutorial with screenshots:

IN THE DESIGNER’S STUDIO WITH JENN LINDSEY

I am super excited to be welcoming our very own Jenn Lindsey to THE DIGI FILES this month!!  I found Jenn when cruising a gallery and instantly fell in love with her unique layout style! I pm’ed her and asked her if she would make a layout on assignment and then later asked her to join our team.  I was so excited when she told me she had decided to start selling templates in her paper-blended style!  I have a hard time creating a blended looking layout, but LOVE the look and it is SO easy with Jenn’s templates!  Here’s a closer look at Jenn’s contributions:

Hi! My name’s Jenn Lindsey, and I’m a 38 year old mother of two adorable boys (Bennett is 4 1/2, and Jackson is 1 1/2). I’ve been married to my sweet hubby for almost 11 years, and we’re currently calling Northern Virginia home. He’s in the Army so we tend to move every 2-3 years, but have been fortunate enough to stay pretty much near the East Coast, which is much closer to our families. I’m originally from upstate New York and he’s from Georgia, so right now we’re pretty much in the middle of both of our families.

I love the versatility of Photoshop. I don’t really do much actual photo editing or correction prior to scrapping a layout. The various blend modes are probably my favorite go to “trick” for making the most of my photographs. To bump up the colors and contrast in my pictures I most often simply duplicate my picture, then change the blend mode of the top layer to Soft Light at around 20-40% opacity which really brings out some finer details in what might have been a photo that originally looked a little washed out. I’ve found photo masks to really be a great addition to the overall composition and cohesion of a layout. Through the various blend modes, you can use them as a subtle fade into the background while still keeping a lot of whitespace, or use a masked photo as the main focus of your layout. They’re great to easily hide any distracting objects in the background of your photos without the need to spend time extracting your subject.

howitallstarted3

I have a degree in Visual Communications, and was already pretty comfortable in Photoshop because I was doing freelance graphic design prior to the arrival of my oldest son. When he was born in March of 2006 I joined a parenting message board, and soon started making signatures for myself and for other members with their children’s photos. This led to stumbling upon digital scrapbooking which seemed right up my alley since I was looking for something to do with my sons pictures instead of them all just residing on my computer in folders. I had tried paper scrapping a handful of times, but it never really stuck. Since I already loved playing with Photoshop, digital was the perfect fit for me.

In the fall of 2006 I started a blog and started designing some freebies. I was invited to join a new designer contest at an online scrap store and won, so my first online shop opened in January of 2008, under the name JenLin Designs. I sold at two other places until landing at ScrapMatters in 2008. At the time I was designing full digital kits and never created any templates. In April 2009 I was expecting the arrival of our second son and decided it was best to “retire” so my family could have my undivided attention.

I’ve spent these past 19 months really enjoying just scrapping (which I hadn’t really devoted much time to when I made the jump into designing in the beginning), and feel that my personal style has really evolved and developed over this time. I was excited to join the creative team here at The Daily Digi in May of this year, and that has helped to even further develop my scrapping. Now that I’ve got a good sense of where my strengths lie, I’m back to designing the products that I enjoy using most, and I feel that I can offer something unique to the market with my templates. My template designs come directly from layouts I’ve already created and loved, so I know whether the design composition is workable or not right from the beginning. I think you have to really enjoy working with your own products, and I truly do. I love creating multiple layouts from the same template and seeing how unique each one is.

I’m happy to have recently joined the very talented team at After Five Designs with the goal of creating versatile and unique template products that still keep the focus on showcasing the photos. I won’t release any products that I haven’t loved using in my own layouts, and really hope other scrappers will find them as versatile as I do.

inspirestocreate3

I’m most inspired by recent photos that I’ve taken that I can’t wait to scrap. Since I do primarily templates, my layouts come first, then if I really like the way they turned out I’ll then create a template from it. When I take pictures I can almost envision in my head the way the final layout is going to look, so it’s a great challenge for me to then get started on it.

toolbox3

I’ve got an HP HDX16 widescreen laptop that’s about a year old. It’s got 4 GB RAM with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz processor with 500 GB of disk space. It’s got a NVIDIA GeForce GY 130M graphics card. I back up to a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive, although not as regularly as I really should, and really need to get an additional EHD since this one is pretty much busting at the seams.

Photoshop CS4 is what I use 99% of the time. I also have Illustrator CS that I dabble in a bit when I feel like doodling or handwriting something, but admittedly I don’t know my way around that program as well as I’d like.

I’ve had a Canon Rebel XS for 2 years now, and just got an awesome 50mm f/1.2 lens this past summer that I haven’t taken off since. I was pretty satisfied with the pictures I was already taking with my standard lens, but am even more thrilled with the results from the 50mm.

I’ve got a Bamboo Fun (medium size) tablet that I pull out from time to time when I’m extracting something. It’s so much easier to control the pen versus a mouse with detailed work. If my boys weren’t so fascinated with it I’d use it more often, but don’t want their sticky little fingers all over it. I also take random iPhone pics or pull still shots from my FLIP HD video camera from time to time to use in my layouts as well.

Digi Scrapping with Pennants

awolff_tddbanner_600

Before we get started with today’s post, I wanted to be sure to call your attention to this amazing FREE GIFT from Amy Wolff. It’s included in this month’s playbook which you can get by purchasing this month’s DIGI FILES + PLAYBOOK package here or as part of a monthly or yearly subscription to the DIGI GAME here. Thank you so much Amy for sharing this awesome gift with us! Now let us show you how to use these fun little pennant banners on your own digi layouts!

.

One of the great things about digital scrapbooking designs is that the turnaround time is so fast from the creator to the consumer. When pennants (some call them flag banners) became suddenly popular, they started showing up in many digital scrapbooking kits. I (Katie) just adore pennants and I confess that I’ve bought several kits JUST because they had pennants in them. True story! Do any of you do that? Please tell me I’m not the only one who will buy a digi kit because of one great element. lol!

After my pennant collection grew, I realized I wasn’t really sure how to use them on a page. I searched the galleries and asked our talented team members to help me out and now I have some great pennant ideas to share with you!

SCRAPPING WITH PENNANTS:

TIP from Jenn: I like to put a larger drop shadow on pennants/banners so they appear to be lifted off of the page, while anchoring it to the page in random places with different types of fasteners.

.

TIP: Use pennants as a border to anchor your page design. I love way Rachael placed the colorful pennant along the bottom of her line of photos.

.

TIP: Spread the pennant banner across a 2 page spread. I really love how Melissa carried the pennant over both pages to tie them together visually.

On your birthday I took lots of photos of what you are doing each day now that you are one. You read you book of rellies, checked=

Emily, we had to wait for Daddy to get home from work before you could open your presents and have your cake. We got you all bathed and ready for bed just in time for Daddy to get home. You opened up your present from Daddy and Mummy - a new swing - had a play outside with the lights on, then had your birthday cake and ate it too!

.

TIP: The curving lines of the pennant adds visual interest to the design of this page. I love how it adds a touch of whimsy! (layout linked for credits)

Tblan_spooktacular

.

TIP: Pennants can be short (or used in pieces) to add a small page accent. The horizontal line of this pennant really emphasizes the darling photo! (layout linked for credits)

mond-3500x35001

.

TIP: Pennants are a great place to put titles! Just add one letter per flag for an eye-catching title image.

4863523378_347d037cc6

.

TIP: A pennant banner is the perfect embellishment for a party theme. They also work well for circus and carnival pages. Of course you can use them on ANY type of page to add a little fun to your pages!

I’m going to give you a tip about shadowing your elements. I think a lot of people just add a drop shadow on their element. You can play with shadows to let them look a little bit more realistic.

How do you start with it:
First be sure that you are on the layout of the element with the drop shadow, click on the right button of the mouse on the drop shadow, and then you get a connection with a series of choices, choose for ‘create layer’. You’ll see that the drop shadow will come with a new layer. Click on the layer of the drop shadow and go to warp-tool (edit-transform-warp) and then you can play with your drop shadow to look them more realistic.

howitallstarted3

When my son was born, I wanted to make a ‘Thank you’ card for our family and friends. It all started with Photo Editing, that was in 2006. After a few weeks I discovered digital scrapbooking and a new world opened for me. It looked all so amazing and those layouts were beautiful. I started to buy some digital kits and since then I have never stopped. After a while I wanted to go further and make my own stuff. In 2008 I started with making my own papers and elements. I started with a blog and made some freebies, after a few weeks I got a spot in a store and became a digital designer. I think it’s great that you can choose your own theme and colors.

inspirestocreate3

I look a lot in magazines, or simply the clothes of my kids, surfing through the internet. I love the clean and simple style which I also try to give to my designs. Mostly I start searching after colors and a name for it and start to make papers and then the elements.

I use Photoshop CS4.

I have a Canon Eos 50D. I have 2 lenses, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and a Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS.

I have a wacom Bamboo Pen tablet since 3 months and I still can’t work with it. I have to make time for it so I can learn working with it because I think it it something wonderful for designers or scrappers.

In the Playbook this month, we cover design tips, tips for creating a layout without a template, some fun text techniques, and so much more.  It’s 40 pages total for November.

Now, for our winners from yesterday’s post:
